Taylor Swift 'relates' to Daenerys Targaryen only without all the murder
Taylor Swift has admitted that she can relate to Daenerys Targaryen in Game Of Thrones.
Only without, you know, the murder.
The Lover singer has long been a fan of the HBO series, with I Did Something Bad from her sixth album Reputation rumoured to be about Arya Stark.
Now she has revealed that she is particularly fond of the Mother of Dragons, played by Emilia Clarke, because she could empathise with her struggle to ‘maintain’ the power she has in her life.
Comparing her own life to that of the fictional character, she said: ‘I’ve also tried very hard – and this is one thing I regret – to convince people that I wasn’t the one holding the puppet strings of my marketing existence, or the fact that I sit in a conference room several times a week and come up with these ideas.
‘I felt for a very long time that people don’t want to think of a woman in music who isn’t just a happy, talented accident.’
‘Look at the Game Of Thrones finale,’ she added.
‘I specifically really related to Daenerys’ storyline because for me it portrayed that it is a lot easier for a woman to attain power than to maintain it.’
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Taylor acknowledged that although Daenarys may not be the best character, thanks to pretty much killing the entirety of King’s Landing, she still sees her death as a ‘total metaphor’.
‘Like, obviously I didn’t want Daenerys to become that kind of character, but in taking away what I chose to take away from it, I thought maybe they’re trying to portray her climbing the ladder to the top was a lot easier than maintaining it, because for me, the times when I felt like I was going insane was when I was trying to maintain my career in the same way that I ascended,’ she added.
‘It’s easier to get power than to keep it. It’s easier to get acclaim than to keep it. It’s easier to get attention than to keep it.’
The Shake It Off singer recently revealed tour dates for 2020 – and there’s a conveniently empty spot for the Saturday and Sunday of Glastonbury Festival 2020.
Taylor shared with fans that she will be performing across various festivals, some of which she has curated herself, tweeting: ‘The Lover album is open fields, sunsets, + SUMMER. I want to perform it in a way that feels authentic. I want to go to some places I haven’t been and play festivals. Where we didn’t have festivals, we made some.
‘Introducing, Lover Fest East + West!’
There are no UK dates yet but she will play Oslo on 26 June and Denmark on 1 July; Glastonbury 2020 will run 24 – 28 June while other potential dates include London’s BST Festival which in 2019 ran between 5 and 14 July.
