Zoë Kravitz Says Her Catwoman Workout Is 'Intense'

Shooting on The Batman has officially begun, meaning the cast are at the height of their superhero transformations. Robert Pattinson, the latest actor to play Bruce Wayne, has been training with a Brazilian jiu-jitsu expert to nail his Batman fighting style. And Zoë Kravitz, who has been cast as Catwoman in the movie, just revealed that she’s been going through an “intense” preparation schedule of her own.

“It’s pretty intense,” Kravitz said during a recent appearance on the podcast Questlove Supreme. “We started shooting two weeks ago, but before that I was in London for two months, just getting in shape, training, learning fights.”

When asked whether her training has stuck, Kravitz simply replied: “I can fight now.”

Kravitz is the latest in a long line of actresses to play Selina Kyle on the big screen. Most recently, Anne Hathaway played her in the 2012 finale of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. According to PopSugar, she prepared for the role by taking up dance, martial arts and yoga, as well as lifting weights and doing stunt training. “I’ve always thought that skinny was the goal, but with this job, I also have to be strong,” Hathaway said in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar at the time.

Prior to The Dark Knight Rises, Halle Berry portrayed an alternate version of the character named Patience Phillips in 2004’s Catwoman. While the movie itself was critically panned, earning Berry a Razzie Award, she got in fighting feline form for the role, working with trainer Harley Pasternak to train in rapid 25-minute bursts between takes on-set.

“We would work out five days a week, because they film five days a week,” Pasternak said. “And we’d work out during a typical 30-minute lunch break, but it was usually 25 with them. Each workout starts with cardio warmup and then we do circuits of upper body and lower body, then abs and then a cardio cooldown. All in 25 minutes.”

While Kravitz didn’t go into details about her “intense” Catwoman workout, she has hinted at an earlier portrayal of the character which she may draw on when it comes to how she interprets Selina Kyle in The Batman. “”I think Catwoman is an iconic character,” she recently told Variety. “And then of course Michelle Pfeiffer – her performance has always been super inspiring to me.”
