Friends writer says Ross WASN’T meant to say Rachel’s name at the altar & the iconic moment was down to a blooper
A FRIENDS writer has revealed that Ross was never meant to say Rachel’s name at the altar in the infamous wedding scene.
The Ross and Rachel drama kept fans gripped for the better part of a decade, with ‘we were on a break’ becoming part of the dating dictionary.
One iconic moment in their love story is when Ross, played by David Schwimmer, says Rachel’s, played by Jennifer Aniston, name at the altar, instead of his fiancé, Emily.
While the shocking scene went down in Friends history, a writer has revealed it was never meant to happen at all.
A superfan uploaded an interview to Instagram, where he revealed the name switch came about after David messed up his lines.
They said: “We never knew how it was going to end. We struggled with it, we couldn’t figure it out.
"And then there was one time, at a taping, where David Schwimmer walked in the room.
"What he was supposed to say was ‘I have the cab waiting downstairs Emily’.
"But he walked in and said ‘I have the cab waiting, Rachel’.
“‘Oh shoot, sorry, let me start again’.
“And he ran back out, and we kind of went, that’s what should happen.”
The infamous line happens in the finale of season four, aptly called ‘The One With Ross’ Wedding’, while the opening episode of season five is called ‘The One After Ross Says Rachel’.
The scene shows Ross and Emily at the altar, as David says ‘I Ross’, before the priest says ‘take thee Emily’, and then Ross utters the line ‘take thee Rachel’.
The mess-up at the wedding set the storyline for years after, before Ross and Rachel finally get together and welcome baby Emma.
Thousands of fans have commented on the clip, is disbelief over how the script ended up being written.
One fan wrote: “Omg fun fact!!”
Another said: “Damn.”
A third commented: “Bro what??”
This person asked: “Did you know this.”
Another thought: “Mental!”
While this person added: “And that’s why we love FRIENDS!!”
