Kate Winslet reveals the Queen ‘swiftly ended their chat by pushing away her handshake’ as she accepted her CBE – The Sun
KATE Winslet revealed that the Queen had a subtle way of letting her know their chat was over when she got her CBE – by pushing her hand away.
The Oscar-winning actress, 44, met the monarch when she was awarded the honour at Buckingham Palace in 2012 and spoke of the memorable moment.
Recalling on the Graham Norton Show, Kate said: “She did this most extraordinary thing.
“First of all, she’d go the most incredible skin and beautiful bouncy hair.
“Of course, there is a system and she is very well rehearsed and very well practised at this. You are told what to do and you step forwards and curtsey or bow or whatever fumble, terrible thing I probably did.
“And then you put out your hand to shake it and she sort of gives you this suggestive nudge backwards, like “you’re done, that’s it. Go back again.
“I was like oh okay, I wasn’t expecting that.”
Graham asked what Kate had said to Her Majesty, 93, when she received her honour.
Kate continued: “She said ‘congratulations on all your achievements’. She said ‘you are a mother aren’t you?’
“And I said yes, and she said ‘well that is the only job.’
"And I thought ‘good lady. I was really, really touched that she said that.”
Graham jokingly cut in making a pushing back motion, and said: “And then she went ‘better get back to it!’”.
"You put out your hand to shake it and she sort of gives you this suggestive nudge backwards".
Kate laughed: “Fair enough, I have to say fair enough.”
Kate is mum to Mia, 18, with first husband Jim Threapleton and Joe, 15, with second spouse Sam Mendes, and Bear Blaze, five, with third husband Ned Rocknroll.
Speaking afterwards, Kate, who won the Best Actress Oscar in 2009 for The Reader, said royal encounter was “incomparably overwhelming”.
Kate added of her CBE: “The sense of gravity is enormous and you very much feel you are being acknowledged by the whole country in a way.”
It’s not the first time the Queen has had a comical encounter with a celebrity.
Her Majesty gave Lewis Hamilton a dressing down over his table manners, the F1 star has revealed.
A year after he was presented with his MBE in 2009, Lewis was one of eight guests to be invited to lunch with the monarch, where he made a social faux pas.
Speaking to the BBC’s Graham Norton, he said: “I was excited and started to talk to her but she said, pointing to my left, ‘No, you speak that way first and I’ll speak this way and then I’ll come back to you.’
“She is a sweet woman and we talked about how she spends her weekends, houses and music. She is really cool.”
We shared how the Queen is hiring new kitchen staff – and you’ll get PAID £18k to live at Buckingham Palace.
If food isn’t your thing, the Queen is also on the lookout for someone to take care of her treasured horses.
Meanwhile, Shawn Mendes stood in silence with the Queen for 10 MINUTES – after being told he wasn’t allowed to speak to her.
