Princess Diana was a style icon to many and in her time the most glamorous royal the world could think of. Meghan Markle, 41, is a perfect style successor to Princess Diana in the Royal Family and there is also a very sweet scent story linking the two.
Only so much is known about Princess Diana’s beauty choices, as opposed to her fashion choices that have been widely documented.
Royal fans will know that she used Mary Greenwell as her MUA for a number of years, and her leading hairdresser, Sam McKnight, cared for her iconic pixie cut for several years.
But when it comes to Diana’s choice of fragrance, the choice of scent the Princess wore was pretty much under wraps during her lifetime.
According to the website, Celebrity Fragrance Guide, Princess Diana had a selection of fragrances she liked to wear, most notably Hermes 24 Faubourg, Penhaligon’s Bluebell Cologne, and Creed Royal Water which was created especially for her.
The Penhaligon’s Bluebell Cologne is interesting, as the Duchess of Sussex previously said in an interview that before she became a royal, Jo Malone London Wild Bluebell was her go-to fragrance for everyday wear.
Even more peculiar, the two fragrances have a host of the same notes inside.
If anything, Meghan’s favourite fragrance, which costs £110, seems like a modern-day update of the one Princess Diana loved to wear.
Penhaligon’s Bluebell is described as a citrus floral with notes of lily of the valley, rose, jasmine, and a touch of clove.
Jo Malone London’s Wild Bluebell has citrus notes to open, lily of the valley, jasmine, rose hip, and clove, ending in base notes of white amber and musk.
Perfume notes can become trends and many fragrances can follow a fashion-led desire for them.
Penhaligon’s Bluebell may have stopped producing Bluebell as it is currently out of stock on their site.
According to Vogue, one of Kate Middleton’s all-time favourite scents is none other than Jo Malone London Orange Blossom Cologne, a firm favourite among floral fragrance fans.
With top notes of clementine flower, middle notes of white lilac and water lily, and base notes of orris wood, Jo Malone Orange Blossom is floral and a little bit sparkly, which makes it feel modern and refreshing on the first smell. Then, as it dries down fans will experience warmer white flowers and eventually a soft and powdery aroma.
The unisex fragrance was created by Jean Claude Delville in 2003 and according to Fragrantica, “was inspired by a stay in the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles”.
The great thing about Jo Malone fragrances is that they lend themselves beautifully to fragrance layering, so can be combined with others in the range to create something truly bespoke.
Jo Malone says Orange Blossom is best combined with White Jasmine & Mint or with Blue Agava & Cacao.
For her wedding day, however, the current Princess of Wales opted for something a little different with Illuminum’s White Gardenia Petals, a delicate floral fragrance with notes of bergamot, lily and ylang-ylang.
The £110 fragrance sells out regularly due to its connection to Kate so it can be tricky to get your hands on.
In a nod to Jo Malone’s Orange Blossom, Westminster Abbey was decked out with Orange Blossom candles for Kate’s wedding day.
British Vogue reported that Jo Malone London scented the wedding with “a selection of candles, hand washes and lotions”.
