Kamala Harris is making pearls a part of her signature style on the campaign trail. But there’s a lot more to the accessory than meets the eye.

Since Joe Biden announced the California native as his running mate for the 2020 presidential election, she’s been donning a very specific ensemble. This includes a sharp power suit, which she always accessorizes with a pearl necklace. Specifically, a white double strand set from Irene Neuwirth.

Though this style of jewelry is favored among many politicians from Nancy Pelosi to Hillary Clinton, the pearls have always been a staple of Harris’.

Taking a look back at the politician’s 1986 Howard University graduation photo, you can see her smiling as she sports a pearl necklace with a matching set of drop earrings. According to Vanity Fair, Harris was a part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, which refers to their founding members and incorporators as the “Twenty Pearls.” So upon initiation, each new member is given a badge decorated with 20 pearls.

“Pearls represent refinement and wisdom,” international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Glenda Glover, told the publication. “We train young ladies to be leaders and to make sure they have the wisdom to lead…and that goes hand in hand with the true meaning of what Alpha Kappa Alpha is all about.”

This “refinement” is something the lawyer has carried with her throughout her career. As British Vogue’s contributing jewelry director Carol Woolton notes, “Pearls are a safe political choice projecting an image of success and classy refinement, rather than glamour and sex appeal.”

While the Irene Neuwirth piece seems to be her go-to at the moment, throughout the years the senator has been spotted wearing a set of head-turning large black pearls as well as classic single-strands.
