Billy Porter Developing Hollywood-Themed Script ‘Fruits of Thy Labor’ With Berlanti Prods. for Peacock
Peacock is developing a drama script from “Pose” star Billy Porter and Dan McCabe that explores a Black family’s multi-generational imprint in Hollywood. “Fruits of Thy Labor” also comes from Berlanti Productions.
Warner Bros. TV, where Berlanti Prods. is based, is the studio. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden will also executive produce, while Berlanti’s Jonathan Gabay is producer. Porter and McCabe worked together on McCabe’s 2019 play “The Purists,” which Porter directed.
Peacock has given a script development deal to “Fruits of Thy Labor,” which Porter will write with McCabe, but Porter is not attached to star. Here’s the logline: “‘Fruits of Thy Lavor’ is a family drama that follows three generations of an African-American showbiz dynasty navigating their way through life, love, politics, and career.”
Porter, of course, is coming off a three-season run on FX’s “Pose,” for which he won the lead drama actor Emmy in 2019. He has signed on to make his feature directorial debut with the coming-of-age story “What If?” from a screenplay by Alvaro García Lecuona for Orion Pictures. Porter’s other credits include originating the role of Lola in the Broadway musical “Kinky Boots,” for which he won a Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards, as well as the Grammy for best musical-theatre album.
Busy Berlanti Prods. is developing other projects for Peacock including an adaptation of the Caroline Kepnes’ “Providence” novels, via Sera Gamble and Neil Reynolds.
“Fruits of Thy Labor” is a reunion of sorts for Porter and Berlanti: The “Pose” star was part of the cast in the 2000 film “The Broken Hearts Club,” which Berlanti wrote and directed.
