Im a YouTube motor star but men bullied me because Im blonde and love cars
YouTube star Supercar Blondie has 70 million online followers where she shows herself zooming around in some of the world’s speediest cars – while rubbing shoulders with A-list celebs and F1 drivers.
Alex Hirschi is the brain behind one of the most popular motor-focused content where she showcases her adrenaline fuelled life.
Not only does she have the number one car-related social media account, with only one post she can easily bank up to six figure sums per post.
To fans it seems like the blonde bombshell has an envy worthy life – but, it has not always been that way.
After getting bullied, Alex took the trauma and churned it into motivation to build a better life for herself and it is safe to say that she is a force to be reckoned with.
Despite now having lapped up many miles and much success, Alex still has to pinch herself when some of the biggest names in the industry slide into her DMs for advice on cars.
"I have always loved driving and loved cars – living in Dubai I got to be around some pretty incredible cars so my interest piqued.
"I really wanted to share what I could see here with the world and it just started as a hobby.
"But when I saw that so many other people loved seeing these cars as much as I did, I started to take it more seriously,” the 36-year-old explained to The Sun.
So, she quit her career to see what would happen!
Success was not just handed to Alex though, she had to pave her own way through a male-dominated industry that would often dismiss her for being a woman.
But, despite the odds being stacked against her, this gave more drive and motivation to Alex to make sure her name was known by car-enthusiasts and the world's greatest.
In just four years since quitting her job as a radio presenter, Alex has established a huge fanbase who cannot get enough of her simplified and educational videos discussing the high-tech specifications of some of the priciest cars on the planet.
Now she has 25 staff of her own, Alex is a true driving force in the motor industry, but although her life is full of glitz and glamour she loves just being able to drive some of the worlds best vehicles and loves hanging out with fellow car lovers.
She claims her favourite moments are when she can just drive without the camera peering at her.
However, Alex did not always feel this way.
Alex noted: "I felt hugely judged in this space when I was starting out. I didn’t just feel judged, I was judged. I was almost always the only woman in the room at car events.
"There would be lots of whispering when I walked in the room and a lot of bullying behind the scenes. It wasn’t fun."
Alex also found people looked down on her for discussing the cars in layman's terms rather than technical language.
She noted: "The car world was always so intimidating. I wanted to open it up to more people but it was a hard slog, to begin with."
And, the criticism did not just come from those in the industry – Alex is no stranger to getting negative remarks online.
She even has to seek therapy thanks to the comments left on her videos.
Alex said: "That helped a lot. I also took a break from reading comments. Now it really doesn’t bother me."
The trolls and the judgement from the industry were not the only downsides for Alex paving her way into the motor industry, she opened up to reveal she had an emotional breakdown thanks to her hectic schedule.
Two years ago she would travel 300 days out of every year and never got to see her family or friends.
Covid provided a respite for an exhausted Alex as she finally had to stay at home for a while.
She commented: "That’s when we started building the business and hiring others to help. I’m close to my family so that really helps, knowing people are there to love you and support you.
"There are lots of hard times because social media is 24/7, there’s always someone awake ready to watch somewhere in the world so you don’t get 'working hours'.
Alex has quite the fan base, with 8 million YouTube subscribers, nearly 10 million on Instagram and 45 million on Facebook – however she still is astounded by her success.
Alex claims it still blows her mind.
Thanks to her relentless work ethic and passion, Alex’s has even been presented awards like the 2022 Shorty Award for Breakout Youtuber and crowned the Influencer of the Year by Esquire Magazine Middle East and was listed in the top 50 most influential women in the Arab world.
Alex claims her online following is like having a support network of millions.
