Is your daily shower giving you acne? This water filter claims to give you better skin
So you’ve bought all the right skincare products, have learnt to keep your hands away from your face and cleanse your skin twice a day religiously – but have you ever thought that the WATER you wash with might be causing your breakouts?
If you live in an area of hard water, you may have experienced the sheer joy that comes from showering in softer water, perhaps when on holiday. Your skin feels silkier, hair is less knotty, and maybe you noticed that spots seemed to shrink, too.
There is evidence that hard water can cause skin concerns like irritation and breakouts – and something as simple as fitting a water filter to your shower may make all the difference.
The Hello Klean shower filter, available to buy here for £59, is a nifty little device that screws on easily to most shower attachments. Inside, it uses SIX different methods to filter the water, removing 90 per cent of chlorine, minerals and other impurities before they reach the skin.

And now for the science. “Hard water contains high levels of calcium and magnesium carbonates, which stop soaps from properly dissolving, resulting in some residue left on the skin,” explains Sujata Jolly, medical skin scientist and founder of Clinogen.
“These deposits can lead to blocked pores which inhibit the release of natural skin oils to the surface – this can cause dry, flaky, itchy skin as well as the occasional breakout."
This filter can also improve the condition of your hair. The minerals in hard water can cause hair to feel dry and weighed down, explain Hello Klean, while chlorine strips natural oils from your hair and skin, which can lead to dry skin, a flaky scalp and oxidised hair colour.
It should be noted that if you were thinking this might also make scrubbing the bathroom easier, it won't. This filter won’t dramatically reduce limescale build-up, unfortunately – for that you’ll need a proper household water softening system.
But one simple tweak to your shower in return for a whole list of head-to-toe benefits? We’ll definitely be diving in.
