Joao Cancelo becomes the third player to pass 200 Dream Team points this season
LAST week we wondered who out of Trent Alexander-Arnold (£6.9m) and Harry Kane (£6.9m) would reach the 200-point mark first.
Liverpool’s homegrown right-back needed just a single point from the Carabao Cup final to celebrate his double century but we questioned whether he would be swooped by Tottenham’s No10 on Saturday lunchtime.
Kane ran riot against leaky Leeds but he fell just short of the milestone despite a 15-point haul.
And an unexpected blank against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night means the England captain will have to wait until at least Game Week 27 to join the very exclusive club.
As anticipated, Alexander-Arnold got the point he needed (and six more) at Wembley to become the second player to pass 200 points this season – Mohamed Salah (£8.4m) was the first, of course.
We were so preoccupied with Alexander-Arnold and Kane’s mini contest that we foolishly took our eyes off the mighty Joao Cancelo (£6.8m).
Manchester City’s technically-gifted full-back is the best performer of Game Week 26 so far having taken Everton and Peterborough for 21 points.
The Portugal international was named Star Man after Pep Guardiola’s side narrowly beat the Toffees at the weekend before registering a straightforward clean sheet and 7+ rating in the FA Cup on Tuesday night.
As a result, Cancelo has swooped Kane to become the third player to achieve 200 points in 2021/22.
The 27-year-old has been incredibly good this season, playing essentially as an extra midfielder in practice – no City player has taken more shots in the league this term.
He’s registered double-figure hauls in eight different fixtures this season and with City favourites to retain their league title and into the last eight of the FA Cup (and Champions League for all intents and purposes), there is likely to be more to come before the campaign’s end.
Cancelo’s ownership of 26.9% is high but it could be argued that he deserves to be more popular – the third-best asset in the game is the eighth-most selected player.
