Kate’s trick to help ‘uncomfortable’ William when girls hit on him at university

Prince William famously met his future wife Kate Middleton while they studied together at university after they were placed into the same student halls.

But they were close friends before their romance blossomed, which meant Kate often saw him getting hit on by girls when they were out partying together.

Even though they weren't together, she always looked out for her royal pal and had a clever trick to help him out when things got a bit awkward with a female fan.

Speaking to royal expert Katie Nicholl for her book Kate: The Future Queen, their friend Laura Warshauer said: "They had each other's backs and looked out for each other."

During a party in their first term, just a few weeks after they met, Kate stepped in to save Wills from a very keen admirer.

Laura recalls: "Kate and I were eating brownies. Kate was never a big drinker, she didn't need alcohol to give her confidence.

"Will was getting really hit on by this girl at the party and it was getting quite uncomfortable because he couldn't shake her off.

"He was being really polite, but this girl just didn't get the hint.

"All of a sudden Kate came up behind him and put her arms around him.

"He said 'Oh, sorry, but I've got a girlfriend', and he and Kate went off giggling."

Wills was very grateful of her help, and according to Laura he mouthed "thanks so much" to her afterwards.

She said: "Kate was the only girl in the room who could have done that. And that was just a month after we started university."

But it wasn't just William who was a big hit with the opposite sex while at university, and Kate had her fair share of admirers.
