Meghan Markle takes thrift crown from Kate with seven savvy tips including £2 travel secret
Kate Middleton may be known for her thrifty nature – recycling clothes and shopping on the high street – but it seems that sister-in-law Meghan Markle is here to take her crown.
Despite living in a mansion and being married to royalty, Meghan has revealed that she never buys anything without a promo code.
Speaking at the NYTDealbook Online Summit yesterday, the Duchess mentioned that checking for discounts is something that has become second nature for her and is something she has done since she was a child.
“I will never buy anything online without finding an online promo code first,” she said.
But besides her love for coupons, here are some more of her thrifty tips.
Don’t be afraid of drugstore makeup
Known for her dewy skin and low-key makeup looks, Meghan’s beauty bag combines luxury brands like Charlotte Tilbury and Laura Mercier with more affordable options.
Speaking to Hello!, Meghan’s former makeup artist on Suits, Lydia Sellers, revealed that the Duchess had introduced her to Maybelline’s Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara.
For less than £5, Lydia admitted that she can’t go anywhere without it.
“Meghan actually introduced me to a drugstore mascara, Maybelline Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara. I keep it stocked in my kit now at all times thanks to her!,” she said.
“It's great for full volume and lengthening, the formula is super hydrating.”
Choose outfits from the high street
When attending royal engagements, has regularly been seen championing high street brands.
After announcing her engagement to Prince Harry, during a visit to Brixton, the Meghan effect came into full force when a chic black Marks and Spencer jumper she was pictured wearing immediately began flying off the shelves.
Months later, the former actress was seen wearing a fascinator from the same brand, with The Sun revealing that she was a fan of the store’s body shaping tights while pregnant.
Other brands favoured by the 40 year old include Banana Republic, & Other Stories and H&M.
Opt for affordable accessories
While attending glitzy events, Meghan isn’t afraid of pairing her outfits with more affordable accessories.
From covering her face when leaving her extravagant baby show to keeping her looking stylish at the polo, Meghan’s beloved black sunglasses from French designer Les Specs have proved invaluable.
And costing just £45, we could all be like Meghan.
The Duchess is also known for her love of stacked jewellery, wearing a myriad of rings from affordable brands including Missoma, Catbird and Pippa Small.
Her £2 travel secret
Having spent the beginning of her relationship with Prince Harry jetting between Toronto and London, Meghan knows a thing or two when it comes to travelling.
Sharing her secrets to her lifestyle blog The Tig, she shared how they key to packing was putting tumble dryer sheets between her clothing.
She said that it makes “your clothes will smell fresh when you arrive — and especially when you return home” in addition to preventing a build-up of static.
Buy multipurpose essential oils
Another one of Meghan’s travel hacks that is said to have impressed the Duke of Sussex is her love of tea tree oil.
Before embarking on a trip, she took to The Tig to talk about how she’d pack a container of tea tree oil, using it as a “cure-all” for various ailments.
“It’s not the most glamorous thing, but if you get a cut, a mosquito bite, a small breakout, no matter what it is, it’s my little cure-all.
“It’s inexpensive, it’s small enough to carry on, and I bring it with me all the time,” she said.

Do Christmas on a budget
The former Suits star is known for her love of hosting but that doesn’t mean that she spends a fortune on entertaining her loved ones.
In a blog post on her old website, Meghan revealed how she enjoyed celebrating the festive season while also keeping costs low, encouraging friends to bring their own food or to cook together to create a cheaper meal.
When it comes to decorating, she also suggested looking for inexpensive trinkets: “Purchase silver serving trays, platters and nut bowls from flea markets or Etsy to add formality to hors d’ouevres passing,” she said.
More recently, her and Harry were spotted in Pines and Needles in Battersea picking their own Christmas tree for a less formal affair.
Date nights don’t have to cost a fortune
Meghan and Harry are reportedly big fans of going on discreet dates in the countryside.
According to The Sun, the couple and their son Archie were spotted at The Rose and Crown in Winkfield village.
Tucking into a £15 Sunday Roast, Harry was reportedly seen drinking a couple of pints whereas Meghan stuck to water with the meal.
If it works for them, it has to work for us!
