‘Mrs. America’ trailer: Cate Blanchett channels Phyllis Schlafly
The first trailer for the upcoming FX series “Mrs. America” showcases Cate Blanchett as an uptight, cold and calculated Phyllis Schlafly, the 1970s firebrand trying to douse the rising flames of the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).
“I am not against women. I am not against women working outside the home,” says Blanchett’s condescending Schlafly in the clip, released Thursday. “But what I am against is the women’s liberation movement.”
The nine-episode series, premiering April 15 on Hulu, will trace the culture clashes between leaders of the women’s liberation movement and Moral Majority doyen Schlafly, who died at age 92 in 2016. The starry cast also includes Uzo Aduba as Shirley Chisholm, Elizabeth Banks as Jill Ruckelshaus, Margo Martindale as Bella Abzug and Tracey Ullman as Betty Friedan. Expect plenty of wars of words as Schlafly zeroes in on tamping down her opponents’ plans for a “sex-neutral feminist totalitarian nightmare.”
“This fight is not about equality. It’s about power,” Schlafly says. “And I’m just getting started.”
The series was created by Emmy-winning “Mad Men” producer Dahvi Waller.
