  • Comes after online trolls launched tirade of abuse at Camilla over The Crown
  • Falsely suggested she had an affair with Charles throughout marriage to Diana

Prince Charles and Camilla have turned off comments on their latest Twitter post about the Duchess’ charity work after she faced a tirade of abuse from viewers of The Crown.

The Clarence House Twitter account, which posts updates, pictures and videos about the Prince of Wales, 71, and Duchess of Cornwall, 72, shared snaps yesterday as Camilla spoke with a homelessness charity in Brighton.

However, unlike previous tweets posted by the account, the comments on the thread had been switched off on the post.

It comes as the Duchess faced a tirade of hate comments from social media trolls after The Crown falsely suggested she had an affair with Prince Charles throughout his marriage to Diana.

MailOnline has contacted Clarence House for comment.

Prince Charles, 71, and Camilla’s, 72, Clarence House Twitter account has turned off comments on their latest post about the Duchess’ charity work after she faced a tirade of abuse from viewers of The Crown

The latest tweet from Clarence House shares details of a recent video call between the Duchess and a homelessness charity

The post shared by Clarence House read: ‘The Duchess of Cornwall, Patron of @EmmausUK, recently joined a video call with staff and formerly homeless residents of @EmmausBrighton, known as companions, to discuss the challenges faced by the charity as a result of the coronavirus crisis.’

While social media users were able to respond to Prince Charles’ and Camilla’s update by resharing and liking the post, comments had been switched off.

A second follow up post sharing details of the charity and Camilla’s long standing history with the organisation also had the comment function turned off.

Since the latest series of the smash-hit Netflix show The Crown launched days ago, angry viewers have started posting misplaced hate comments to the Duchess on the Royal Family’s social media.

In the latest series of The Crown, which was released days ago, the programme falsely portrays Camilla and Charles continuing their affair throughout his entire marriage to Diana

Online comments by viewers of the programme reveal that many have accepted the fake storylines as historical fact – including the incorrect assertion that Charles and Camilla conducted an affair throughout the Prince’s entire relationship with Diana.

In reality, Charles had practically no contact with Camilla for five years after his marriage in 1981.

Commenting on a picture of Camilla, one cruel toll simple said they were ‘not interested’ in her.

Another harshly wrote: ‘Camila: The world hates you. Princess Diana forever.’

Several social media users shared tributes to the late Princess alongside the picture of the Duchess.

Many of The Crown’s audience have also been fooled by the depiction of Charles and Camilla’s close friendship on Twitter.

One expressed shock that Charles and Camilla had enjoyed a ‘fully fledged affair’ from the start of Charles and Diana’s relationship.

In fact, Charles and Camilla’s affair resumed in 1986 – by which time the marriage had, as the Prince himself famously put it in a TV documentary, ‘irretrievably broken down’.

Many viewers of the show (pictured)  appear to have accepted the fake storylines covering Charles, Camilla and Diana as historical fact

One poster wrote: ‘Almost everything in The Crown is true. And there is even more that hasn’t been covered.

‘How they isolated Diana, how they laughed at her, made her feel crazy, Camilla playing hostess in Diana’s home.’

Royal experts said the portrayal of Charles and Camilla was yet another example of the Netflix series failing to portray the Royal Family truthfully.

Author Sally Bedell Smith, who has written biographies of the Queen, Charles and Diana, said: ‘I am very sad to say that I have heard it over, over and over again that people take The Crown at face value and they believe everything they see in the series, and that includes Charles and Camilla.

‘The notion in the programme that he entered into his marriage cynically with a view to continuing with Camilla and putting his new wife on the side is exceedingly dishonest and damaging. It is just simply not true.’

Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty magazine, said: ‘The Crown is a very one-sided portrayal, which is really the Diana version. The sad thing for people viewing it is that they are going to take it as the correct story line, which it isn’t at all.’
