Prince William and Kate Middleton Made The Cutest Marriage Pact in 2007
Prince William and Kate Middleton have been together forever, but that doesn’t mean that they haven’t experienced relationship challenges.
In royal correspondent Katie Nicholl’s new book, Kate: The Future Queen, she revealed that the royal couple made a marriage pact in 2007 to take the pressure off their relationship and ensure that they would spend the rest of their lives together.
A quick recap of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s relationship
These two met while attending the prestigious St. Andrews University in Scotland. According to Pop Sugar, the duke majored in geography, while Middleton studied art history. They went public with their romance one year before their 2005 graduation.
But the pressure of having a relationship at such a young age eventually started to weigh on them. The public and media consistently put pressure on the couple, insisting that they needed to get married, which contributed to their breakup. In 2007, Prince William told Middleton, “I can’t… It just isn’t going to work. It isn’t fair to you.”
“We were both very young,” the duke later said of the split. “It was at university. We were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our own way, and we were growing up.”
Middleton also weighed in on their breakup, saying, “I think I at the time wasn’t very happy about it, but actually, it made me a stronger person…You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realized. Or I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger. I really valued that time for me as well although I didn’t think it at the time, looking back on it.”
But Prince William and Kate Middleton later reunited
Some time around the breakup, Nicholl wrote, Prince William and Middleton traveled together to the island of Desroches in the Seychelles to get away, and it was there they made the marriage pact..
“There on the paradise island, William promised Kate that he was in the relationship for the long term,” Nicholl wrote. “For the very first time, they talked seriously about marriage, and with the ocean before them and beneath the night sky, they made a pact to marry.”
Three years later, Prince William popped the question. He proposed to Middleton during a trip to Kenya, where they stayed in a cozy cabin.
“I didn’t really plan it that far in advance. I just knew I wanted it to feel comfortable where I did it,” Prince William later said about the proposal.
The couple got married in 2011. They have since welcomed three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
Considering how it all worked ot, it looks like a marriage pact isn’t such a bad idea after all.
