Southampton vs Tottenham betting preview: odds and predictions | The Sun
FOURTH-PLACED Tottenham are eyeing a return to the Champions League but lowly Southampton need the points for an entirely different reason. Who will prevail on Saturday afternoon?
Southampton vs Tottenham odds
Here are the latest match odds for Southampton vs Tottenham.
Southampton vs Tottenham betting preview
With just nine points collected so far at St Mary’s this season, Southampton are owners of the worst home record in the Premier League.
They’ve also conceded more home goals than anyone else (21) while only Wolves have scored fewer on their own patch.
But while those numbers are hardly encouraging for anyone thinking of backing them to win the game at around 4/5, it’s worth noting that there have been some signs of improvement under new boss Ruben Selles.
Saints have won two and drawn one of their last five, a run which has certainly kept them within touching distance of the dreaded trapdoor – while they will enter this game bottom of the table, they are only two points from safety.
A midweek loss to Brentford was a setback but hardly a disaster with Bees boss Thomas Frank admitting that “between the boxes they were actually better than us”.
Clearly Selles and co need to find answers in the penalty boxes but they have something to build on and here face a Spurs side who have lacked consistency for a long time.
Away from home they’ve been particularly vulnerable. In the league, they’ve lost three of their last four on the road, including at Southampton’s relegation rivals Wolverhampton (1-0) and Leicester (4-1).
Antonio Conte’s men also exited the FA Cup away to Sheffield United, while defeat in Milan proved to be their undoing in the Champions League.
At least they now have only the one target – a top-four finish – to focus on but backing them at odds-on looks fraught with danger.

Southampton vs Tottenham best bets
Southampton/Draw double chance
Essentially, we’re betting against a Spurs win here which given their poor away form looks worthwhile at the price.
They’ve lost their last four in all competitions on the road and even once you take into account their decent start to the season, Conte and co have only won five of 13 away games in the league.
They’ve already failed to win at Leicester, Wolves and West Ham who, like Southampton, are right in the thick of the relegation battle.
Given all that, a record of just one win in their last six in this particular fixture isn’t exactly what the doctored ordered.
With the hosts having shown signs of fight of late – seven points won from the last 15 available – Saints can get something here, just as they’ve done against Arsenal and Chelsea already at St Mary’s this season.

Both teams to score
These are two defensively-shaky sides.
As already mentioned, Southampton have conceded more home goals (21) than any other Premier League team.
As for Spurs, the 37 goals in their ‘against’ column is the highest in the top half. It’s also more than relegation candidates Crystal Palace and West Ham.
Saints have scored against Arsenal, Brighton, Newcastle and Chelsea on home turf and can do so again when facing this Spurs defence.

Harry Kane to score first
Were it not for Erling Haaland, Kane’s numbers would be being spoken about much more highly.
With 20 goals in 27 games so far, the England captain is on course to post his best Premier League goal tally in six years.
His record against Southampton is impressive – he’s scored in nine of his last 13 league games against them, while filter things down to matches at St Mary’s and he’s netted in six of the last seven.
With Saints having conceded more home goals than any other side, Kane should get chances here and odds-against quotes of him netting once again look appealing.
However, there’s arguably better value to be had in the first goalscorer market where Kane is on offer at 11/4.
No player has opened the scoring in this season’s Premier League as often as Kane, with eight of his 20 goals being the first of a game.
