Brazilian student, 28, who moved to Switzerland to be with her boyfriend, 58, after four years together admits their 30-year age gap means there’s less ‘silliness’ in their relationship

A student who decided to move across the world to be with her boyfriend has revealed the challenges of having a 30-year age gap – but insisted she doesn’t care that her partner is sometimes mistaken for her father.

Mahely Da Silva, 28, from Sao Paolo, Brazil, met her partner Martin Brenner, 58, from Bern, Switzerland, in 2015 at a restaurant in her hometown.

The couple say they hit it off straight away and started a long-distance relationship, trying to visit each other every month.

But when Mahely was offered a scholarship abroad to study marketing and business, she chose Switzerland and in September 2019 decided to move in with Martin, after four years of travelling back and forth.

Yet the 30-year age gap relationship doesn’t come without its challenges, with Mahely admitting that a ‘downside’ is a lack of playfulness and the couple struggling with being ‘in different stages of life’.

Speaking about the hardships, she admitted: ‘What has been challenging in our relationship is that we are in different stages of life – while Martin knows what he wants, I am still discovering my place in life. 

She added: ‘The downside of having a big age gap is that there is less silliness. On the other hand the different life phases bring new attitudes to each other.

‘A few times people mentioned that it would be challenging for us due to the age difference. A few times we have been mistaken for a family – once a classmate saw a picture of Martin and me on my phone and asked if this was my father.

‘It was funny and we are aware that people like to judge – we cannot control other people thoughts and anyway, what they say or think, says probably more about them then about us.

‘But we have also got positive comments about how nice a couple we were and once we even got free tickets for a jazz show.’

And although Mahely’s mother was initially worried about the future, both families are said to be quite supportive and don’t mind the 30-year gap.

The student, seen with her boyfriend, said: ‘We are aware that people like to judge – we cannot control other people thoughts and anyway, what they say or think, says probably more about them then about us’

‘Our friends were really were supportive and understanding, they are happy since they see how happy we are together and tell us how we became better people.

‘Age is only one of many pieces in the puzzle which is important – we think that open communication, respect, love, affection, compassion, listening and good sex are at least as important.

‘The couple has to be happy and nobody else, since they are living the relationship.’

Recalling the start of her relationship, Mahely(pictured with her boyfriend) said: ‘We were texting or calling each other every day, we were sharing our day as if we met after a day of work or school back home’

‘After meeting Martin, I did a foundation course in England in order to be accepted to university and after two years I was offered a scholarship to study one year abroad.

‘I obviously chose Switzerland and since last September we are living together after four years of distance relationship.’
