Tom Holland's Jaw Dropped Hearing 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' is $20 Million From Passing James Cameron's 'Avatar': ‘It’s Honestly Mind-Blowing!’
Tom Holland, age 25, closes the gap between Spider-Man: No Way Home and James Cameron’s Avatar to just $20 million for the biggest movie of all time. And the Peter Parker actor didn’t even realize it. Spider-Man: No Way Home cast and stars like Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, Tom Holland, and Zendaya have done plenty of interviews recently, but an Uncharted interview caught the British actor more off guard with news of the Sony and Marvel movie’s success.
Tom Holland had a jaw-dropping moment when told ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ could surpass ‘Avatar’ soon
After Spider-Man: No Way Home, Holland hit the ground running, jumping into interviews for Uncharted and his Fred Astaire project.
During an interview with YouTube channel BackstageOL, Holland heard that Spider-Man: No Way Home could soon become the biggest movie of all time.
“I think we’re a bit ways away from the biggest movie of all time, right? No?” Holland said, looking off-camera for confirmation. Host Dave Morales told the Peter Parker actor that Spider-Man: No Way Home sat only $20 million away domestically from the James Cameron movie Avatar.
And Holland had a jaw-dropping moment hearing to Spider-Man: No Way Home box office.
“For real? Holy s***,” He uttered. “Wow, that’s incredible! I didn’t know that. Honestly, that’s amazing! Wow!”
Tom Holland praised director Jon Watts for pushing ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ to ‘Avatar’-levels of success
Even when throwing Peter Parker and Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness with Andrew Garfield from The Amazing Spider-Man and Tobey Maguire from the Sam Raimi trilogy, Holland knew the importance of telling a personal story.
“It’s mind-blowing, it’s honestly mind-blowing,” Holland said. “You know, I think what Jon Watts has done so well with these movies is when we’re making them, they feel small.”
The Spider-Man: No Way Home budget cost Marvel and Sony around $200 million to make, which it has more than made back. Comparing Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avatar budgets, the James Cameron film actually cost more to make, around $237 million.
While the shenanigans Jacob Batalon, Garfield, Maguire, Holland, and Zendaya get up to facing foes like Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), and Electro (Jamie Foxx) remain fun, the heart remained at the center of the chaos.
“They feel so heartfelt, and they feel like we’re making these really intricate, independent movies,” Holland continued. “And when they come out, you’re always so pleasantly surprised that they are not small in any way, shape, or form.”
The Peter Parker actor called the Sony and Marvel movie a ‘huge cultural moment’
Holland commented that his involvement in a movie that turned into “such a huge cultural moment” has really affected him.
“We have had people from all different walks of life come together and sit in the same theater and watch the same movie, and feel the same emotions. It honestly feels amazing to be part of that,” Tom Holland said.
When even the Garfield and Maguire deleted scenes draw massive attention, fans definitely agree with Holland. And as the Spider-Man: No Way Home numbers climb closer to Avatar, the entire world certainly voted with their wallets.
“I’m so proud of what Marvel and Sony have achieved, what I have achieved, what Jon Watts has achieved, what everyone has achieved, honestly. I could talk for hours about how grateful I am for this opportunity.”
