What is broken heart syndrome?

HEARTBREAK is often associated with the stress or pain one feels after experiencing a traumatic event, such as a breakup or the loss of a loved one.

However, what some people don't know is that you can actually die from a broken heart.

What is broken heart syndrome?

Broken heart syndrome is known as a temporary heart condition that is often the result of stress or extreme emotions.

While the exact cause is still a medical mystery, the Mayo Clinic states that a surge of stress hormones like adrenaline "might temporarily damage the hearts of some people."

Ultimately, broken heart syndrome temporarily disrupts the heart's usual pumping function.

Has anyone ever died from broken heart syndrome?

To many people, the idea of dying from a broken heart often seems fictional, but experts say it could happen.

On May 26, 2022, Joe Garcia, whose wife died in the horrific Texas school shooting just days before, collapsed and died in what doctors have described as a potential example of broken heart syndrome, according to NBC News.

“It’s a classic case of broken heart syndrome from what’s been described,” said Dr. Deepak Bhatt, a cardiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

However, Bhatt goes on to note that it is impossible to know if it was broken heart syndrome or a heart attack without X-ray imaging or an autopsy.

“Either type of heart attack can be triggered by extreme emotional stress of the sort that would happen if someone just heard, for example, that their wife had died,” Bhatt continued.

“In some cases, it might be a day later. It might be when someone realizes: ‘Oh, wow, my loved one actually is dead. They’re really not coming back.'

"It sounds like that’s what happened," in this case, he concluded.
