Woman livid as cheeky neighbours keep using her rubbish bins
On the parenting forum Mumsnet, the furious woman, who wished to remain anonymous, shared her frustrations over the next-door neighbours who “keep using our bins”. With username @youngatheart00, the Londoner claimed that the neighbour, whom they don’t know very well, has been placing recycling waste “that’s definitely not ours” in her bin, which is causing a problem for her and her family.
The woman explained that all the bins, with numbers painted on them, are kept next to each other, and the neighbours’ are always full.
“This has annoyed me a lot. I’ve moved our bins down the passageway to behind our garden gate in the hope that sends the message. However, they also have a garden gate so I’m not entirely sure this will end the matter!”
The woman explained that the next-door neighbours are a large family and they can ask the council for larger bins, but they “clearly haven’t bothered, they just think they can use ours instead”.
She added that she is not yet at the stage where she wants to confront them but “if I see any more oat milk cartons I may be tempted!” she said.
The woman asked for advice and hundreds of people replied suggesting ways to avoid a confrontation.
Many Mumsnet users said that she should get some kind of lock for the bin and some recommended “a gravity lock”.
Others advised her to talk to them. One said: “Are your neighbours approachable? I would suggest to them that they ask the council for a second recycling bin. I don’t know how it works with your local authority but I got a second bin from the council and there’s only three of us.”
Many women admitted that they also struggle with the same issue. Mumsnet user @avoidingrealhumans explained that her “cheeky” neighbour does the same thing.

She said: “I don’t mind on bin day but she started getting cheekier and it peaked on Christmas day. They had obviously got up before us so when I went to put all the boxes, wrapping paper, etc in my recycling she had filled her own bin and then filled mine too. I took hers out and bagged it, put it on top of her bin and then she put it back in mine!”
Another one said that because the neighbours’ bin is always overflowing, “they have the cheek to start using mine”.
Mumsnet user @sh05 commented that this is so “infuriating”, especially “when they fill it with the wrong stuff and it doesn’t get emptied”.
She continued: “Our troublesome neighbour filled our recycling with polystyrene this week so the bin men rightfully didn’t empty it. I have spoken to him before and he just says I shouldn’t have a problem, as bin collections don’t cost me anything!”
Her bin wasn’t emptied for another two weeks, so she decided to bag all his rubbish up and “left it hanging off his door handle”.
Another woman named Louise also shared her frustration and explained that she is so annoyed after her neighbour placed some nappies, “loose, with no bag” into her bin.
“The bin cleaner cleans the bin with the nappies in, probably assuming I’d put them in like an idiot! I was livid,” she said.
One forum user, @strugglingwithdeciding, explained that she recently realised that her neighbours are also “sneaking bags into our bins”.
“I know it’s only a bin but I pay to keep it clean, I try not to put food waste in and last bin day couldn’t get one of my own bin bags in.”
When people have an issue of this kind with a neighbour, it is recommended to approach them and try talking to them before taking further action.
If it is impossible to reach an agreement, it is recommended to contact the local council or Citizens Advice who can help solve the problem.
