Woman slammed for spending student loan on nose job instead of books or rent
A woman has admitted to spending her entire student loan on a nose job, leaving many people outraged.
Molly Bateman decided to spend all £6,500 of her student Maintenance Loan on the cosmetic surgery.
The 22-year-old, based in Surrey, thought she would splash thousands of pounds on her looks rather than spending it on more traditional means like books and rent.
Usually, the amount of the Maintenance Loan awarded is decided based on the household income of the student’s parents.
Currently, students do not have to pay back their loan until they start earning over £27,295 a year, according to the UK Government website.
So, with the large sum of money in her bank account, the university student turned to the knife to get the procedure done.
She took to TikTok to share her decision.
Referring to the Prime Minister, Molly captioned the video: “Courtesy of big Boris x.”
In the video, Molly can be seen resting in a hospital bed with her nose bandaged and bruised eyes whilst throwing up the peace sign.
Molly then shared another video of herself before and after the cosmetic procedure – and her nose now appears more petite thanks to the Maintenance Loan.
Despite Molly being pleased with her new nose, many people have been left outraged at the student for using ‘taxpayers money’ on her vanity.
One person slammed: “Not Boris, us who work and pay taxes.”
Another user remarked: “This is actually so sad.”
A third voiced: “This is why uni should be funded by the people wanting to go, rather than taxpayers.”
However, some others felt that Molly had every right to spend her loan on whatever she wanted – even if it was not university related.
One user commented: “It’s a loan she will pay it back so it’s basically her money she can spend it how she pleases.”
As another praised: “Finally a student loan that paid off.”
Someone else noted: “Maintenance loan can be spent on anything, if she has her own source of income to use for her food etc, then why not.”
According to Save The Student, Maintenance Loans are: “A type of Student Loan provided by the government, and they're intended to help towards your living costs while you're at university.
"Rent, bills, food, nights out – all these things and more are what the Maintenance Loan is there to help you pay for."
