A TV producer claims she was left with bulging ‘bug eyes’ after a severe allergic reaction to eyebrow dye made her face balloon so much she feared she might lose her sight.
Jackii de la Rosa, from Atlanta, Georgia, decided to get her eyebrows microbladed for the first time to fill in some gaps in the hairs after previously only ever getting them threaded.
The 32-year-old says that the beautician she visited failed to carry out a patch test and within hours she began to feel a ‘tingling sensation’ before her eyes and forehead swelled so much that she was unable to see.
Jackii de la Rosa, 32, from Atlanta, Georgia, was left with a painful and swollen face after a several reaction to eyebrow dye. Jackii claims that her beautician failed to apply a patch test to her skin, which caused the reaction, right
She even compared her swollen face to Will Smith in the film Hitch after his character suffered an allergic reaction to shellfish and was left with a grossly swollen and lumpy face.
Doctors at hospital later confirmed that Jackii was suffering a ‘severe’ allergic reaction to an ingredient in the dye, which she says took her two months to fully recover from.
The beauty lover, who says she has been left with ‘scarred’ eyebrows, is now sharing horrifying footage and photos of her face during the reaction to warn about the importance of patch tests.
Jackii said: ‘I went to where I normally get my eyebrows threaded and they said ‘try something new’ – I’ve always wanted to get my eyebrows filled in so I tried it [microblading].
‘By the time I got home, within an hour, I felt a tingling sensation but I didn’t think anything of it because she did mention to me “you might get some tingling but if you don’t have any swelling you should be fine”.’
But the TV producer revealed she starting seeing swelling in her face and eyes within two hours of the appointment.
‘It was burning my eyebrows and as time progressed my eyes started swelling up really bad and itching terribly,’ she said.

When she realized she couldn’t see anything because her eyes where swollen shut, Jackii took herself to the hospital and feared she might lose her eyesight.
‘My boyfriend had to put me in the car and take me to the hospital and when I got there they took me in immediately because they didn’t want me to lose my sight,’ she said.
‘It was like I had bug eyes. It was so puffy when I touched it I was just like “what the heck, what is in here?”
‘It kind of reminded me of the movie Hitch where [Will Smith] ate something he was allergic to and his face got super big and puffy.’
After rushing to Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, Jackii said doctors immediately admitted her and began treating her with antihistamines and IV fluids.
She was then discharged a few hours later when the medication began to take effect and the swelling subsided enough for her eyes to open again.

The TV producer said her swollen eyes felt puffy at the touch and looked like the eyes of an insect
But that wasn’t the end of her ordeal, as Jackii says the remnants of the dye that had soaked into the skin around her eyebrows caused her face to ‘blow up’ again multiple times over the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, sores on her ‘irritated’ eyebrows scabbed and fell off, pulling hairs out with them. She claims it took two months for the dye to fully wash out of her skin and allow her to heal from the allergic reaction.
Jackii said: ‘It took me two months to fully recover from this. It was so painful, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
‘I had to just keep washing my face but the dye wouldn’t come out fully so even after I left the hospital there were times when the swelling would come back a bit.’
The producer said that she felt like she wanted to ‘scratch and take [the dye] off’ but that she couldn’t because the reaction was on her skin.

Jackii, pictured before, wanted to microblade her eyebrows to get rid of some patches in her hair, but said the procedure has left her with scars and even more holes
‘My eyebrows scarred because they were so irritated from the dye it had to scab and fall out and now I see more spaces than I originally had because of this allergic reaction.’
Jackii now vows to always get a patch test for any future beauty treatments, although she has avoided dyeing her eyebrows again out of fear of suffering another reaction.
She hopes to warn others about the importance of patch tests and to seriously consider beauty treatments and their potential side effects.
Jackii said: ‘I still have a lot of spaces in my eyebrows where the hairs fell out because of the allergic reaction.

The TV producer has also said that it is important that people don’t put themselves in danger in order to meet the high standards of the age of social media
‘I haven’t dyed my eyebrows since this happened – I will fill them in with a pencil or not at all.
‘If I was ever to do anything different I would always patch test now just because it is so important.
She added that it is important that people don’t put themselves in danger in order to meet the high standards of the age of social media.
‘I think we just need to move a little smarter and realize that everyone is beautiful in their own way. That’s what I learned.’
