Charlotte Chaze – a data analyst who has now started her own company called Break Into Tech, which is dedicated to teaching others how to land their dream job – detailed how she went from working in the ‘basement’ of a research lab to becoming a high-paid analyst at AT&T, earning her six-figures along the way.

The 31-year-old recently revealed some of her secrets via TikTok, earning her viral fame – which included applying for jobs you don’t think you’re qualified for and teaching yourself new skills through free online programs.

‘When I was making $28K a year I was working as a biomedical researcher in a basement lab that had no windows,’ she recalled in the video, which has now been viewed more than 794,000 times.

Use keywords and phrases in your resumé that are used a lot in job listings

‘In 2018, I decided I had enough and started looking for jobs, even ones I wasn’t qualified for, and I ended up landing one of those – a data analytics associate at a consulting company.’

Charlotte explained that she spent most of her hours working on Excel documents and PowerPoint presentations at the new gig.

And while she was making more money than her previous job, she still wasn’t satisfied, adding, ‘It paid $70K but I wasn’t liking it much.’

She then decided to grow her expertise – and learned how to decipher a programing language called Structured Query Language, which is often used in the tech world, through a free online course.

And according to the TikToker, adding to her skillset helped her score an even better job.

‘I again applied for jobs I wasn’t qualified for, and ended up landing a job as a data analyst at Comcast,’ she revealed.

‘This job paid $90K and the reason I got it was because I taught myself [Structured Query Language] over a matter of a couple weeks using a website called Khan Academy.

‘During the interview process, I talked to them about the SQL projects I had done and they ended up offering me the position.’

After a year and a half in the position, Charlotte said she was promoted to analyst manager – and her salary rose to $104K a year.

During that time, she said she also kept her LinkedIn profile up to date, and was stunned when a year after her promotion she received a job offer from AT&T.

‘A recruiter from AT&T reached out to me about a job that would pay $158K,’ she recalled.

‘I went through the interview process and eventually got the offer in December 2021. This is all because I put myself out there and applied to jobs that I didn’t really feel like I was qualified for but knew I could handle.

‘And most importantly,’ she concluded, ‘I taught myself data analytics online.’

In a follow-up video, the data analyst shared some more advice, explaining that people often sell themselves short while applying to jobs.

‘Any experience you have can be relevant experience,’ she said. ‘[You have to just] reframe your perspective.’

Charlotte encouraged those looking to break into the tech world for the first time to list all of their past jobs on their LinkedIn profile or resumé, even if they feel that they have nothing to do with the new position they’re applying for – but added that they should use specific wording when describing their experience.

‘Make note of what keywords and phrases are popular among data analytics job postings,’ she suggested.

‘Then you’re going to figure out how you can explain [your skills] using those data analytic key words.

‘When you do that, you’re still explaining [your experience], you’re just using lingo in the data analytics field.

‘That way when a recruiter sees your resume or LinkedIn and they’re scanning for key words in the data analytics job posting that they wrote, they’re seeing those key words on your resume and LinkedIn.’

She added that you should ‘never lie about your experience,’ but rather, learn to explain it in a different way.

Now, Charlotte is offering her own free course, in which she details ‘all of her favorite resources,’ and shares various LinkedIn profile and resumé tips through her website, Break Into Tech.

‘Almost anyone can break in, all you have to do is try to teach yourself the skills online. You can even do that for free,’ she stated.

‘So many people I worked with don’t have degrees, don’t have previous experience in tech roles, they taught themselves the skills and broke in just like I did.’
