MASON MOUNT is ready to kick on at Chelsea – after getting fed up of older players trying to kick him up in the air.
The England youngster learnt the hard way during his time in Holland on loan at Vitesse Arnhem and last season at Derby in the Championship that more experienced players will literally try and leave their mark on him.
But the midfielder is unfazed by the attentions of veteran players who he says assumed he is a “weak” 21-year-old and says he has the mental scope to deal with some tasty tackles.
In one match in England's second tier he even got the best revenge on the player who tried to kick him up in the air – by scoring a goal!
He told the Daily Mail: “I was up against this experienced player and he obviously saw me as young and a first time player in the Championship.
“He tried to get one over on me and show he was the bigger man. It was maybe like a test to see what I was like as a player and where I was at as a person.
“Is he weak? Can he take tough tackles or little things off the ball that don't get seen or spoken about?
“But it never fazed me at all. We carried on playing. I kept my head and knew what he was trying to do. And then I scored and that kind of finished it… I had a word with him as I ran back.
“I can't tell you what I said to him but it was explicit! He didn't say anything back. If it was a test then I came out on top. He knew by the end of that game that I wasn't weak-minded.”
BRIGHTON boss Graham Potter remains unfazed at the prospect of losing star centre-half Lewis Dunk to Chelsea in a £50million deal.
The Blues hope to wrap up the huge transfer for the 28-year-old in this month's window.
Dunk has been one of the major reasons for Potter's impressive start to his reign on the South Coast.
Potter refuses to confirm or deny if the Londoners have made a bid for the defender.
He told the Daily Express: “He signed a long term contract (July 2018). We are quite relaxed about the situation.
“I have really enjoyed working with Lewis as a footballer and as a person. He is really important for us and we are really happy that he is with us.
“January is always a little bit different to every other month if we are being honest. There is always a lot going on, a lot of talk from you guys (media) questions and interest.
“The window is open so there is more things going on in that regard but that is normal we know that is the case. When the window is open there is always more talk other than the football.”
WITH their transfer ban lifted, Chelsea are eyeing up a number of potential deals before the end of the window.
Frank Lampard's side have received a boost in their pursuit for Lyon star Moussa Dembele.
L'Equipe claim the French side have secured a loan deal for Villarreal striker Karl Toko Ekambi.
This could mean Rudi Garcia's side will be willing to let Dembele make the move to the Premier League.
While Chelsea and Manchester United have reportedly been in contact with Edinson Cavani to discuss a free transfer at the end of the season.
The Ligue 1 champions are holding out for £26million for the veteran striker, 33.
And Spurs are plotting revenge on Chelsea as they target Willian on a free transfer – almost seven years after the Blues hijacked their transfer, according to the Standard.
The Brazilian’s Stamford Bridge contract expires at the end of the season and he is already free to speak with overseas sides over a summer switch.
The Blues have already offered the 31-year-old a one-year extension, though the player is seeking a two-year deal and increase on his £110,000-a-week wages.
THREE TRACK AK
Tottenham and Arsenal are poised to pounce if Chelsea do not use their £40million buy-back option on Nathan Ake.
The Dutch defender, 24, has starred for the Cherries since leaving Stamford Bridge and the Blues have the option to
secure a return.
But the Athletic claims Chelsea's scouting reports have left doubts over Ake's ability to make an impact for Frank
Lampard's side.
And that could open the door for one of their top-four rivals to swoop, with Spurs, City and Arsenal all keeping tabs on the Dutch international.
