Andy Ruiz Jr would be ‘honoured’ to fight at 2020 Olympic Games for Mexico after Anthony Joshua rematch – The Sun
ANDY RUIZ JR has revealed he would be honoured to represent Mexico at next year’s Olympics after his rematch with Anthony Joshua.
The 30-year-old WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight world champion will battles the Brit star again on December 7 in Saudi Arabia.
“Destroyer” shocked the world when he claimed the straps with a huge upset victory over AJ at New York’s Madison Square Garden in June.
Now he appears to have his sights set on achieving another golden moment at Tokyo 2020.
Professional boxers are now allowed to compete at the Olympic Games – and Ruiz has been invited to do just that.
He took to Twitter to share a letter from Mexico’s boxing commission to represent his country in the Far East.
And although he insisted there are no contractual agreements in place, he has expressed how honoured he would be to do so on behalf of his nation.
Ruiz wrote: “It would be a great honour to represent Mexico in the Olympic Games.
“I have to see the possible contractual commitments, but we will do everything possible to contribute in any way and put the name of Mexico high once again. GREAT initiative.”
Meanwhile, Joshua has been tipped to gain revenge on the 19st champ by English boxing legend Frank Bruno after underestimating him first time around.
He said: “In the build-up to the first fight, everyone was looking at Ruiz Jr and calling him a Teletubby.
“They weren’t wondering IF Anthony Joshua would win, just in which round he would KO him.
“It proved you cannot underestimate any fighter and judge them on how they look, you have to judge on how they fight.
“Ruiz Jr is a seasoned professional, he is based in America and spars with a lot of top guys.
“I know he has spent some time with Evander Holyfield and done some work in the Floyd Mayweather gym. But, to get the win, Joshua just needs to be right on point as last time I think he underestimated him.”
