Barcelona stars forced to FLEE the pitch after winning LaLiga as furious Espanyol fans disrupt rivals’ title celebrations… before directing their anger towards club’s board amid threat of relegation

• Barcelona were confirmed league champions as they dominated proceedings
• The players were celebrating their title win as fans entered the field of play
• They then made a dash for the tunnel with some supporters carrying weapons 

Barcelona won their 27th league title with a 4-2 win over neighbours Espanyol but were chased down the tunnel by an Espanyol pitch invasion.

Xavi’s players linked hands and bounced around the centre-circle after winning what was a demolition derby but angry Espanyol supporters then broke a non-existent security cordon and headed towards the champions who made their way quickly into the dressing room.

Security initially tried to block the fans, but there were too many and they made their ways towards the players in their numbers, some yielding weapons as they took unkindly to their rivals celebrating on their pitch.

Some ultras made their ways down the tunnel and were confronted by Barca players including Sergio Busquets and Marcos Alonso, while others turned their attention to the board, with the club on the verge of relegation.

It’s not believed any players were harmed, though the quick exit from the pitch was provided a shock and a dampener to the club’s celebrations for winning LaLiga.

Rival supporters didn’t take kindly to the celebrations, though, and made an attack

‘It’s normal to celebrate but I understand that we are not at home and we can’t be disrespectful,’ said Xavi after the game.

Relegation haunted Espanyol were shocking on the night and well beaten by a Barcelona team led from the front by Robert Lewandowski.

He scored the opening goal of the game on 11 minutes from Alejandro Balde’s assist and it was Balde who scored the second of the game on 20 minutes.

Five minutes before the break Lewandowski got his 21st goal of the season and his second of the night to make it 3-0 before half time. He faded badly after the World Cup but has come back strongly in the run-in and will finish the season not just as a Champion but also as the top scorer in La Liga.

Jules Kounde got Barcelona’s fourth on 53 minutes and Barcelona finally eased up allowing Javi Puado and Joselu to make the scoreline more respectable.

Barcelona hit the front early in the season with an unbeaten run that was only interrupted when Real Madrid beat them in the first Clasico of the season.

They wobbled, crashing out of Europe before the World Cup. but in his first full season Xavi steadied the ship and his team only lost twice more.

They beat Real Madrid in the second meeting of the two teams and with a double over Atletico Madrid there were home and dry.

Manager and former player Xavi said the success was ‘a job well done’ and ‘a great feeling’

The fans then directed their anger at the board as they continue to face the threat of relegation

Espanyol have conceded 16 goals in their last seven games and have four games left this year

Their fans made it clear that they felt what the team have been producing is not good enough

‘It’s a great feeling,’ said Xavi. ‘It’s a job well done. This started in July and after months of work and sacrifice we have achieved our aim. The fans and the club deserve it, it gives us stability and security that things are being done well.

‘We have sealed La Liga with a fantastic performance. We were brilliant tonight. The team relaxed at the end and Espanyol showed pride.’

Marc Andre ter Stegen needed to be persuaded to join the post-match celebrations out on the pitch. In the end after Xavi’s demands he went out into the middle. He was not happy to have conceded twice but he can console himself with the fact that in a strong field he has been their player of the season conceding just 13 goals all season.

Espanyol have conceded 16 goals in their last seven games and that’s why as Barcelona plan for the open top bus ride through the city on Monday, with the women’s team who won their league weeks ago, Espanyol must try to pick themselves up for their last four games.
