Carl Frampton OUT of fight against Emmanuel Dominguez after ‘freak accident’ with large ornament breaks his hand – The Sun
CARL FRAMPTON is OUT of his fight against Emmanuel Dominguez after a "freak accident" with a large ornament broke his hand.
The Belfast featherweight was to face Mexican Dominguez in Philadelphia on Saturday in his first fight since losing to IBF champion Josh Warrington in December.
But Frampton, 32, confirmed a bizarre incident with an ornament in a hotel lobby fractured his hand.
He claims a concrete pillar fell through a curtain and crashed into a table he had his hands on.
The boxer wrote: "Today a freak accident occurred and I won't be able to take part in my fight against Emmanuel Dominguez.
"A large ornament, in the hotel lobby, was knocked over accidentally and hit me on the left hand, fracturing the fifth metacarple.
"I'm extremely disappointed for the travelling support and for myself and my team.
"I've put everything into this camp, I've been away from my amazing wife and kids for most of it and it all feels like a waste.
"Although it was out of my control I'd like to apologise to Emmanuel, MTK Global, Top Rank, my team, my travelling support and to my wife and kids for being away so long.
"I'm absolutely devastated."
It comes after Frampton looked in line to challenge for the WBO featherweight title against Oscar Valdez.
However, the Mexican champion moved up in weight after being ordered to face mandatory challenger Shakur Stevenson.
Frampton's US promoter Bob Arum admitted the Irishman would have a better chance in winning a world title by moving up to super-featherweight – opposed to fighting US prospect Stevenson.
Arum said: "Without any question (moving up) would be a quicker route.
"There's a lot of room if Carl decides to go for the super-featherweight title.
"I don't think at this stage that Frampton does well with Shakur. Shakur is an amazing talent who will probably end up to be a welterweight."
