Drew Lock’s mom wades into Broncos’ COVID-19 controversy with wild rant

Laura Lock, the mother of Broncos quarterback Drew Lock, has a bone to pick with critics amid Denver’s recent COVID-19 debacle with its signal-callers.

Taking to Twitter on Monday, the Lock matriarch slammed commenters for chastising her son’s decision-making, while also calling into question how some NFLers who did test positive escaped public backlash.

“Shame — shame on the many for thinking that they can speak of others in damning ways. Here is the truth – Drew and the QB room requested permission to watch film. They came to the facility on their own time to put in more work,” Laura began.

“His leadership which seems to be in question by some brought them to this predicament; Drew asking for more commitment of his QB room than just a normal NFL day. Drew and the QBs even requesting a room at the facility rather than risking ‘trouble’ and meeting at an off campus site.”

Laura added how the quarterbacks “let their guard down,” indicating the situation is “unfortunate — not damning.”

“This is a group of 4 men that had tested negative that day and are with their people — their ‘ecosystem’ as well tell our children and friend groups. They let their guard down, they did not wear their masks the entire time they were in the socially distanced environment,” she continued.

Prior to Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints, Lock — in addition to backup quarterback Brett Rypien and the practice squad’s Blake Bortles — were ruled out after coming into proximity with quarterback Jeff Driskel, who tested positive for COVID-19 last Thursday.

The Broncos started practice squad receiver Kendall Hinton in Sunday’s 31-3 loss to the Saints. They are slated to sign quarterback Kyle Shurmur, the son of Denver’s offensive coordinator – and former Giants coach – Pat Shurmur, according to ESPN.com.

Lock’s mom added Monday that while the quarterback does not have the novel coronavirus, she called for an investigation into those around the league who have tested positive for the lethal virus.

“Oh and by the way he does not have Covid — He wasn’t the one with covid and as I pray nightly, I hope he doesn’t nor anyone else get Covid. Let’s interrogate those in the NFL that do have Covid — how safe were they being? Who was in their ‘ecosystem’ that shouldn’t have been or were they just not wearing their masks all the time?” Laura wrote.

“As a parent, an educator, a friend, a co-worker, a boss — using people to make an example of a situation is wrong. The NFL used one of their own as an example — this is where the shame is.”

Amid the uptick in COVID-19 cases, the originally scheduled Thanksgiving showdown between the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers has been moved to Wednesday afternoon.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson had tested positive for coronavirus last week.
