Eoin Morgan ready to commit to stay on as England white-ball captain after World Cup win – The Sun

ENGLAND want Eoin Morgan to stay as white-ball captain — and he is ready to say YES.

Morgan and team supremo Ashley Giles have already met to discuss future plans and Giles has made it clear he wants the World Cup-winning skipper to carry on.

He has yet to make up his mind finally but sources close to Morgan believe he is 70-30 or even 80-20 likely to remain.

That means he is poised to take charge of England through to the T20 World Cup in Australia in October 2020 but is unlikely to be around to defend the 50-over tournament in India in 2023.

He would have the chance of being a World Cup-winning skipper in both the 50-over and T20 formats.

Morgan admitted he was shattered after England’s dramatic super over triumph over New Zealand at Lord’s on July 14 – the culmination of four years’ planning.

But a holiday helped him recuperate and he has loved returning to cricket with four matches so far for Middlesex in the T20 Blast.

SEPTEMBER DEADLINE

England leave for New Zealand on October 21 for five T20 matches so Morgan must inform Giles of his decision by mid-September.

One reason that Giles wants Morgan to stay is because Trevor Bayliss departs at the end of the summer and he does not want a new head coach and a new limited-overs captain.

Morgan commands total respect in the England dressing-room and his presence would encourage stability and continuity as the new coach settles in.

If Morgan was to depart, vice-captain Jos Buttler is the obvious man to take over.

But England are increasingly worried about Buttler’s workload and he has suffered an emotional reaction to coming down from the high of the World Cup.

Buttler was rested for England’s Test against Ireland and twice dismissed for single-figure scores in the opening Ashes defeat at Edgbaston.

He lost the Test vice-captaincy when Ben Stokes was given back the job earlier this month.

Playing in the Big Bash, IPL and all formats for England appears to be taking a toll on Buttler.

He is also having to get used to fatherhood after his wife Louise gave birth to their first child, Georgia Rose in April.
