Farmers Insurance Open tips
Hot tip – Harris English, 22-1
His Sony Open flop a couple of weeks ago was the first time he had failed to make it into the top six in his last four events – and that was forgivable considering he had won for the first time in eight years a week earlier.
The American has climbed to 16th in the world rankings on the back of some ultra-consistent golf.
Beaten in a play-off at Torrey Pines in 2015, and is a better player now – as well as one oozing confidence at the moment.
Medium price – Jason Day, 35-1
The former world No1 won this event in 2015 and 2018, and recovered from a bad start to finish T16 last year.
Provided golf’s Mr Sicknote doesn’t break a nail he should have another good week in California.
Day has been widely written off because of his injury woes, but his fourth place in last year’s USPGA Championship proves he can still mix it with the world’s best when things are going his way.
Longshot – Brandt Snedeker 150-1
Another double champion in San Diego – winning here in 2012 and 2016, and was also runner-up in 2013.
AND he finished level with Rory McIlroy in third place last year on 12 under par.
Not much to recommend him apart from the horses for courses theory, with missed cuts in his last three starts.
But Sneds certainly knows how to play Torrey Pines, so worth a small interest at such a big price.
