Golf tips and free bets: Three picks for the Rocket Mortgage Classic including 125/1 longshot
THE ROCKET Mortgage Classic takes place in Detroit this week as we build towards the British Open in the middle of July.
And while some of the top Americans have already headed for Europe there are still some big guns playing Stateside this week.
Bryson DeChambeau, Master champion Hideki Matsuyama and Patrick Reed are the top three in the betting list.
And our man David Facey has made his three picks including a 125/1 long shot.
Tips for Rocket Mortgage
Hot shot: Patrick Reed, 14-1
Captain America’s superhero status has dulled a bit since his win at the Farmers Insurance at the start of the year, and he could do with a shot of confidence before he flies across the Atlantic for the Open.
Reed keeps popping up on leaderboards without closing the deal. But four top tens – including a share of eighth at three Masters – and top twenty finishes in the other two Majors have kept him in the top ten of the world rankings.
His short game remains breath taking. Only Phil Mickelson can claim to have the same amount of imagination around the greens.
Reed finished fifth when this event was first staged in Detroit two years ago, and should do better this time.
Mid price: Kevin Kisner, 33-1
The former World Match Play champion admits he has been having a shocker this year, but it looked like he may have found something as he claimed a share of fifth at the Travelers last week.
Kisner shot 63 in the second round and repeated the does on the final day, leaving him to curse the ragged 74 in between that cost him a shot at the title.
But it was definitely a performance he can build on, especially over another course that offers plenty of birdie opportunities – Bryson DeChambeau shot 23 under to win here last year.
Kisner was third behind DeChambeau, five shots adrift of the man mountain. But at roughly five times the odds of the defending champion he looks a more tempting proposition.
Long shot: Ryan Armour, 125-1
The veteran American is not the most consistent of golfers, but he produced impressive back-to-back performances at the Travelers and this event last year, finishing sixth and fourth.
He looked like putting in another big performance at the Travelers last week when a second round 64 sent him charging up the leaderboard, although that effort fizzled out tamely over the weekend.
But a share of eighth place in the Palmetto in his previous outing suggested that 64 was no fluke, and he is worth a small interest at big odds.
He was actually on the same mark as DeChambeau heading into the final round of this event a year ago, but could not match the winner’s finishing burst.
