Man Utd’s £85million new boy Harry Maguire warned by Virgil van Dijk that huge price tag brings big pressure – The Sun
VIRGIL VAN DIJK has warned Harry Maguire that a huge price tag always brings big pressure.
The Dutchman joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for £75million, a world record for a defender at the time.
But Manchester United have beaten that by paying Leicester £85m for 26-year-old Maguire — which also makes the centre-back the most expensive English player of all time.
And Dutchman Van Dijk, 28, is honest enough to admit that dealing with the size of his fee has sometimes been a problem.
Asked about Maguire, he said: “Good luck to him. I can’t say anything about my transfer fee because there was always going to be a time when it was going to change. That’s the market.
“He doesn’t have any influence on that. The price comes with pressure but it doesn’t change too much because you always have pressure at big clubs like Manchester United.
“It is not easy to completely shut off all the pressure. Personally, I like to put things in perspective.
“Quite a lot of things are more important than playing football and what we do — we are blessed.
“Liverpool are such a big club. You need to enjoy it but the pressure will always be there.”
The Reds’ sixth European Cup victory was the perfect end to a season that saw them get beaten to the Premier League crown by a single point by Manchester City.
VVD added: “We have spoken about a lot of things but we are starting over again. Last season was last season.
“We won the Champions League but if you look at the other competitions, we didn’t do too great.
“The traditional ‘top six’ all want to win the Premier League.
“Last year we were close and we are going to try again. The standard is going to be high but we will go for it.”
And Kop skipper Jordan Henderson claims this season will not be another two-horse title race with City.
Midfielder Hendo, 29, said: “I disagree it will be us two fighting it out. Other teams have improved so it’s not going to be just us, it’s going to be everybody.
“The Premier League will be tough, it always is. We want to start well with a performance on Friday and a good result.
“We can’t always think back to what we did last season. We’re looking forward and want to improve as a team.”
