Medical emergency halts Wimbledon last-16 match between Medvedev and Lehecka
A medical emergency in the crowd on Court 1 halted Daniil Medvedev’s last-16 battle with Jiri Lehecka at Wimbledon on Monday.
The incident occurred in game five of the second set with Medvedev holding a 6-4 3-1 lead over his Czech opponent.
Lehecka went to serve at 30-30 but the umpire stopped play and immediately made a call on his phone.
Stewards were seen dashing to a female spectator in the crowd as the players moved to their chairs while play was suspended.
The woman in need appeared to be sat behind the baseline where Lehecka was serving.
The match umpire left his chair and came down to the court to explain the situation to Medvedev and Lehecka, who were then seen looking up at the area in the crowd where the incident was taking place.
Around eight minutes later, applause broke out in the crowd as the players returned to the baseline to resume the match with the situation dealt with.
The female spectator was spotted up on her feet and being helped down stairs by paramedics, much to the relief of everyone inside Court 1.
Not long after play resumed, after losing the second set, Lehecka called it quits and retired from the match through injury, giving Medvedev a walkover.
It means the Russian third seed has reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time, marking his best run at the Championships.
