Orioles break an MLB record for home runs surrendered – and the season isn’t even halfway over

BALTIMORE — Home runs are flying out of ballparks this season, and Baltimore Orioles pitchers are high on the list of reasons why.

The San Diego Padres hit five homers Wednesday in a 10-5 victory over the Orioles – marking the 10th time this year O's pitchers have yielded five or more home runs in a game. 

That breaks the single-season record set by the Cincinnati Reds in 2016. 

And it only took the Orioles 80 games – which means we haven't even reached the halfway point of the season yet. 

"It’s just not real good. Homers are up around the league, obviously, but we’ve given up more than our fair share," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said.

"I think a little bit of it’s growing pains, a little bit of it’s poor execution, but when you have a team with a 6.00 ERA and you’ve given up 1400 homers so far, it’s hard to win games."

In a season that's already on pace to shatter the existing record for homers, the Orioles pitchers have given up a major league-leading 165 of them. To their fans and their manager, it only seems like 1400.

Franmil Reyes led the way for San Diego with a pair of homers, including a 452-foot blast to left field. Greg Garcia, Eric Hosmer and Hunter Renfroe also went deep for the Padres.
