Ryan Brierley angered by those who say Salford are an 'off the cuff' team | The Sun
RYAN Brierley has a simple message for all Salford’s critics – do not call us an off the cuff team.
The Red Devils’ full back admits he is insulted to hear the description for the way Paul Rowley’s side plays.
Not afraid to chance their arm, Salford are not afraid to try things, whether they work or not.
But Brierley insists it is not just a case of making it up as they go along, as was showed in Sunday’s 32-6 win over top four contenders Catalans Dragons.
He said: “I don’t like it when we get called off the cuff. I find it insulting as we train really hard on things like our shape.
“It’s reliant on 13 blokes knowing their role.
“I’d call it process, shape-driven rugby with a passing team. The off the cuff phrase gets thrown at Paul’s teams a lot, people say they ‘just throw it anywhere.’
“But that probably insults me more than it does Paul. It bugs me because I’m a big part of that transition coming out of our own end.

“So when the off the cuff phrase gets thrown at us, I’m thinking, ‘That questions me and my leadership ability from the back.
“A lot’s been mentioned about Paul’s brand of rugby but all the defensive stuff was also Paul’s brand of rugby.”
Salford were left annoyed by Sky TV pundit Jon Wilkin, who described them as ‘flimsy’ and said: “I just don’t see Salford with having any backbone. I just don’t think they’ve got the minerals to get it done.”
And hooker Andy Ackers said: “It does hurt our feelings as we’re a team who’s like a band of brothers, we’re together.
“We’re always competing with each other and pushing each other.”
