Today's free ITV racing tips: Newmarket, Newbury and Market Rasen – Steve Mullen's betting preview for the racing this Saturday, July 20
GO with the Pro at Newbury.
PROSCHEMA (2.25) ran a belter when third in the Northumberland Plate on the all-weather at Newcastle last time. He was dead last turning into the straight but motored through the field to be beaten just a length at the line. That effort was all the better because the track was riding slow and it was extra tough to come from behind.
Maybe connections weren’t sure that he’d stay the 2m trip at the first attempt but he clearly did and they can keep him closer to the pace today. Richard Kingscote takes over from a young claimer and is the right man for the job.
Proschema’s turf form is strong too and he was second in a big handicap at York from higher in the weights last season. With plenty of rain around he won’t mind how the ground comes up.
There was a lot to like about the way The Grand Visir won the Ascot Stakes last time. That was over 2m4f and he’ll try to make the most of his bottomless stamina. He’s another who handles any conditions and can be relied on to give his best.
Who Dares Wins won the Plate last time and a 3lb rise in the weights looks very generous.
Call a Taxi in the Weatherbys Super Sprint (3.40 Newbury). TAXIWALA looks a fair price for a horse with bags of speed. It’s interesting to see Oisin Murphy back on board as he did the steering when Archie Watson’s two-year-old won at Brighton last month.
He then performed with credit in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot despite being away from the pace. This is a typically tough renewal of this contest but he’s shown enough to be competitive.
Ventura Rebel is a red-hot favourite after going close in the Norfolk Stakes despite losing a shoe. Three of the past five favourites have won the race but offers of around 6-4 are on the silly side.
Very high draws can win this race and that gives a solid each-way chance to Bettys Hope at huge odds. She’s stepping up in class but has clocked some decent times and Silvestre De Sousa is on board.
Mullen’s top tips for Saturday
2.10 Market Rasen – St Gallen (Latest odds)
2.25 Newbury – Proschema (Latest odds)
3.20 Market Rasen – Casablanca Mix (Latest odds)
3.40 Newbury – Taxiwala (Latest odds)
ST GALLEN is improving fast and can take the Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen (2.10).
Richard Johnson rides plenty of winners for Olly Murphy these days and has been on board for both his successes since switching from the Flat. He started with a convincing victory over course and distance before building on that form at Kelso last time.
This is clearly a tougher race than that but there could be a lot more to come and the handicapper doesn’t have his measure just yet.
John Constable is a quirky customer but he could hit the frame at long odds if getting his act together. He was an excellent third in the Swinton Hurdle at Haydock two runs ago and the first-time visor could help.
CASABLANCA MIX (3.20 Market Rasen) won with plenty in hand at Aintree last time can handle this hike in class.
She likes a speed track such as the home of the National and she was a good third in this Listed level at Huntingdon earlier this year. Trainer Nicky Henderson has brought him along slowly and she shapes as though this slightly longer distance will help.
More Buck’s won this race 12 months ago and had a quiet spin around here last time out. His recent form is nothing to write home about but we know he relishes this trip and track.
He’s a fair 6lb higher in the weights than last year and should be competitive.
Dr Newland has been prescribing winners galore lately and his Ronava has to be considered too. He’s done well since moving to the yard from Ireland and skipped home at Hexham last time after a bloodless Stratford win. There could be a lot more to come.
