Trevor Lawrence is going off as Jets draft noise grows

Trevor Lawrence threw his first interception in nearly a year Saturday and for a brief moment looked human. The rest of the first half, not so much.

The Clemson quarterback, and the potential apple of the Jets’ eyes, got off to a ridiculous start against Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon, completing 22 of 27 passes for 391 yards and a career-high five touchdowns, all in the opening 30 minutes.

Lawrence, widely projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, threw touchdown passes of five, 83, 34, 8, and 16 yards before halftime, picking apart the Georgia Tech defense to stake No. 1 Clemson to a 52-7 lead at the break.

The only blemish on Lawrence’s early line was an interception on a deep pass in the first quarter. It was his first pick since Oct. 19, 2019 against Louisville, having thrown 366 straight passes in between without one — putting him just shy of Russell Wilson’s ACC record of 379.

The Jets, like other NFL bottom-dwellers, were likely watching with a keen eye. While the Jets have the rest of the season to evaluate Sam Darnold (once he returns from a shoulder injury) and his future with the franchise, the potential chance to pick Lawrence at No. 1 might be impossible to pass up.

“I’m going to be real with you: I don’t think Darnold is the one,’’ former Jets cornerback Ray Mickens told The Post’s Mark Cannizzaro this week. “I think the Jets need to do everything they can to get Trevor Lawrence. True franchise quarterbacks don’t come around but like once in a decade. Trevor Lawrence is the next guy — a franchise-changing quarterback.’’
