13 Reasons Why season 3 trailer: Why isn’t Hannah Baker in the trailer?
The third season of 13 Reasons Why is just days away from its August 23 release and Netflix has dropped a new trailer to send anticipation levels through the roof. A number of the 13 Reasons Why cast appear in the new promo, from Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen to Alisha Boe as Jessica Davis, but one person not to star is Hannah Baker (played by Katherine Langford). Here’s why Hannah wasn’t in the season three promo.
Why isn’t Hannah Baker in the 13 Reasons Why season 3 trailer?
WARNING: This article contains spoilers from 13 Reasons Why seasons 1-2.
13 Reasons Why season three follows the mystery of who killed Bryce Walker (Justin Prentice).
The new trailer reflects this as the drama follows each of the Liberty High students raising suspicions as to who Bryce’s killer could be.
Hannah Baker doesn’t appear in the 13 Reasons Why season three promo, nor is she even mentioned.
The simple answer for this is, quite simply, because Katherine Langford does not return to 13 Reason Why in season three.
Hannah Baker played a pivotal role throughout both of the first two seasons of 13 Reasons Why.
Her suicide in season one and the subsequent set of tapes she left for those who had wronged her was the premise for the series.
In season two, the action turned to the truth behind the tapes and ended with Hannah’s funeral in the season finale.
13 Reasons Why season three will now go down a completely different path, a decision showrunner Brian Yorkey alluded to months ago.
He told Union Journalism: “If there is a future for the show, to me, it’s about these characters, and not necessarily a new set of reasons or a new set of tapes.
“I don’t see a tremendous continued presence for Hannah because I think we needed her to finish telling everyone else’s side of her story and we needed her so that Clay could get to a point of saying, ‘I love you and I let you go,’”
Langford also said goodbye to her character after season two had ended in a heartfelt Instagram post.
The 13 Reasons Why star said: “‘Hannah…I love you…and I let you go.’ Those are the words I was able to say six months ago, and now can finally share with you as my journey on @13reasonswhy has officially come to an END!
“As most of you know, this was my first ever job and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to tell Hannah’s story so fully in season one, and to be asked back for a season two.
“Thank you to @netflix @paramountpics @anoncontent, the incredible producers, creatives, cast and crew for making these last two years so special. And to all of you here – Thank you for filling my life with love and light.
“This show will always be a special part of my life, and regardless of whether Hannah is there or not, I know that I will continue to strive to do work that is meaningful and has a positive impact – whether that be in film, music, or any other form of art.”
With Hannah’s story over, season three will delve into the mystery of who shot Bryce.
Each of the main cast are suspects, as well as some new faces, and there are a number of clues to suggest who it may be.
In the trailer, Clay, Jessica, Tyler Down (Devin Druid), Tony Padilla (Christian Navarro), Alex Standall (Miles Heizer), Justin Foley (Brandon Flynn), Zach Dempsey (Ross Butler) and newcomer Ani (Grace Saif) all come under scrutiny for the murder of Bryce.
Zach even mentions in the new promo: “I know I should have said something earlier, but I have to now.”
Clay also adds to the mystery by angrily telling Ani: “This whole f****** world is better without him in it.”
Minnette’s character is even arrested in the season three trailer.
Fans will have to wait for season three to drop before a definitive answer as to who killed Bryce is revealed.
13 Reasons Why season 3 is released on Netflix on Friday, August 23.
