Adult Material viewers complain trailer 'blatantly mis-sold' porn drama and rage over 'dark, mindf**k' scenes
CHANNEL 4 viewers have slammed new drama Adult Material and claimed the trailer 'blatantly mis-sold' the show.
The first episode aired on Monday night, with all the episodes dropping on 4OD immediately, and fans were quick to tune in and share their thoughts.
"I'm not being funny but all the previews looked like a story of a young powerful woman thriving in the adult industry and pure entertainment, not this dark, morally bankrupt head fcuk," one person tweeted.
A second posted: "Channel 4 love their dark programmes. It feels like as a viewer, it kind of feels by watching it you’re a part of the exploitation. The trailer blatantly mis-sold this."
A third person added: "It’s gone from being funny to seriously disturbing."
However, others tuning in were quick to defend the show and Hayley Squire's portrayal of porn star Jolene Dollar.
"To those who've only watched 1 episode – stick with it. Jolene's desensitised attitude to sex and consent is explained," they wrote.
"Yes it's not as upbeat as the trailer made out but having watched the whole series it's worth it. The sex industry is not all hearts and flowers #AdultMaterial."
Another fan of the show pointed out: "Made by a female writer, female director and female cinematographer, plus focuses on female characters, so you can be confident it’s not going to be the usual [adult entertainment] story. Give it a chance. It’s deeper than a tweet."
Speaking about her role as Jolene, 32-year-old Hayley recently told Glamour: "With Jolene as far as I'm concerned, she's a feminist. She fights very hard for and very hard for what she has.
"She works to better herself within her means. She confronts these men as well as the women. She goes after the women; she goes after herself in the end as well."
The four-part drama also stars Phil Daniels, Rupert Everett and Kerry Godliman.
