All of Bake Off winner Peter Sawkins’ showstopper creations ranked
He’s done it! The ‘baby-faced assassin’ Peter Sawkins has been crowned the winner of the Great British Bake Off 2020.
The 20-year-old finance student from Edinburgh has demonstrated baking expertise far beyond his years throughout the show, and becomes the Bake Off’s youngest ever winner.
He’s impressed in the tent from day one, and Metro.co.uk readers picked him as their winner after the semi-final – we said he was our firm favourite back in October, too.
He established himself as the most consistent baker throughout the series, proving his skills in Tuesday’s final and seeing off stiff competition from Dave and Laura – who led the tributes after the show.
But how well do you remember Peter’s Showstopper bakes? These are all his delicious creations, ranked from least to most impressive.
Week 3 – The botched bread plaque
Making something that tasted like a ‘piece of leather’ is never a good thing – especially not in the Bake Off tent. Peter turned in his worst show stopper during Bread Week, which left Paul and Prue chewing things over – and over, and over. Thankfully, Peter’s gluten-free signature and rainbow bagels bailed him out.
Week 8 – Jelly jeopardy
Peter actually came closest to leaving the tent in Dessert Week though, after failing to impress the judges with his mini cheesecakes and coming fourth in the technical. His jelly art Christmas cake design left a little to be desired for the showstopper, which he admitted he didn’t spend enough time prepping before the recording.
Week 6 – Cute Kawaii cake
Peter enjoyed a solid if unspectacular time in the tent during Japanese week, embracing his love for badminton with a matcha-flavoured ‘Dizzy the Shuttlecock’ cake. It didn’t ace the judging, but showed the baker’s more playful side and it’s one of the cutest creations he turned in during the whole show.
Week 2 – Burns supper showstopper
Peter won over the whole of Scotland with his Burns Supper’ showstopper – one of the strongest 3D biscuit bakes on display in the tent. He needed it too, after coming 10th in the technical. But Peter could always deliver a special bake when it was more needed, and the judges were full of praise for the scrumptious biscuit creation.
Week 7 – (N)ice cream cake
This was one of the trickiest challenges on the 2020 series of Bake Off, with temperatures sky rocketing while the bakers were making their showstoppers on 80s week. Peter’s ice cream cake was a good effort from the baker, but the additional brands added into the mix made it harder for the cake to set. The intricate decorations and attention to detail more than made up for it, though.
Week 4 – White chocolate treat
When he’s not baking, Peter is one year into a degree in accounting and finance. He celebrated his time in education by making a special graduation-inspired showstopper during chocolate week – although we doubt it’ll last the two years until his studies are over. Paul was a fan of the cake, and Peter’s good start on the show continued in style in week four.
Week 5 – A perfect caged tart
Laura might have won star baker in pastry week, but Peter was very unlucky to miss out – especially after pulling off a very professional caged tart. His flavours were spot on, and the craft he showed with the ornate cage showed his precision. He also made a tray of fish-shaped pasties and won first place in the technical – another strong week.
Week 1 – Gold-medal worthy cake
The showstoppers in week one were a mixed bag to say the least. Hermine made a harrowing effigy of Lupita Nyong’o and Marc’s cake version of David Bowie was so bad that the singer’s son Duncan Jones had a pop at it. Peter’s version of Olympic hero Sir Chris Hoy was a real winner though. It was the moment Peter announced himself in the tent and won his first Star Baker.
Week 9 – A classic cube cake
This simple, elegant and beautifully flavoured effort earned him his second Star Baker title and a handshake from Paul Hollywood to boot. Peter delivered a brilliant performance when it mattered in the semi-final, marking his finest creation to date at the time. His pistachio and raspberry cube cake were everything the judges asked for, and showed Peter could combine brilliant flavour profiles with professional finishes. Paul said: ‘You’ve got a nice shine on all of them and it’s set beautifully.’
Week 10 – The final showstopper
Saving the best until last, Peter signed off in style on Tuesday’s show, with an inspired creation that tipped the final in his favour. The baker showed all of the skills in his arsenal when it mattered the most, creating a staggering final showstopper that ensured his victory.
The sheer amount of work he managed to fit in during his last appearance in the tent was a real achievement, and the judges were full of praise for his ‘delicious’ flavours and ‘lovely and silky smooth’ textures. Congratulations Peter!
The Great British Bake Off airs on Channel 4.
