Anthea Turner fires back at Ant Middleton jibes as she quits SAS: Who Dares Wins

Anthea Turner became the second celebrity to quit SAS: Who Dares Wins tonight after Katie Price handed her number to chief instructor Ant Middleton moments into tonight’s episode.

The 59-year-old – aka Number Five – was the oldest recruit ever to join the Channel 4 series and appeared to be one of the strongest contestants of the current SAS: Who Dares Wins line-up until a 5km sprint while armed with a full backpack the size of a small teenager meant she drifted to the back of the herd.

‘I wish in many ways I could have stayed longer but I knew I had to give number five [her badge] in because I would endanger the rest of the team,’ Anthea told Metro.co.uk.

‘My cardio just wasn’t strong enough to keep up with them with a backpack as well. I knew that dependant on the order challenges came in if it was something where I had to be cool and calm and not lose my head my maturity would stand for me, not against me.’

And she was right. Tonight’s instalment saw the former Blue Peter presenter dive off a helicopter backwards into ice cold waters with more precision than any of her teammates.

Though, that didn’t stop former soldier Ant from consistently branding her with the ‘Grandma’ tag.

‘Even though Ant was enjoying calling me Grandma there were times when I was thinking, “I’m not old enough to be your grandma, you’re not going to rile me. I’m old enough to give birth to you but not old enough to be your grandma.”

Ultimately, when it came down to the crunch, Anthea knew that handing over her number five badge would be for the greater good. Even if others might disagree.

‘You have a very tiny peak into the world of SAS and that little peak tells you it’s all about the team and you cannot let the team down and I knew they would beast the team if I came last again.’

‘That was the trigger,’ she stressed. ‘I would have stayed because I was enjoying it.

‘It was when Ant said, “Do you want to let the team down? At first I said “no” and it was that. I thought, “I can’t bear the thought of that if I let the team down.”

‘You’re in it for yourself in many ways but you also have to think like a team player. I would always be at the back. My cardio and my ability to run wasn’t enough to keep me at the front.

‘It’s a total privilege to have stepped into that world and be a part of it for a brief bit if time.’

SAS: Who Dares Wins continues next Monday at 9pm on Channel 4.
