Antiques Roadshow guest refuses to sell diamond brooch after huge valuation: ‘I won’t!’
Antiques Roadshow is brought to BBC viewers from some of the most picturesque and notable places in the UK. This week was no different as yet more members of the public proudly showed off some of their treasured items to the team of experts. Later on in the programme, one guest was lost for words when she was told the hefty sum of money her beautiful diamond brooch was worth tonight.
This week saw Fiona Bruce back at the helm as she travelled to Lytham Hall in Lancashire to meet a new batch of guests with their intriguing belongings.
As many locals presented their items to the team of experts, one guest was left gobsmacked after her piece of jewellery was given a huge price-tag.
The guest presented antique expert Geoffrey Munn with a box, and he couldn’t wait to open the contents, telling her: “This is the most superb piece of case-making for a piece of jewellery.
“On the outside, it helps us enormously because it tells us exactly who the recipient of the contents was.”
The inscription on the case read: “WH Williams, Lady Mayoress, Liverpool 1909-1910,” and the expert proceeded to open up the contents.

He revealed a stunning diamond brooch to the crowd, telling the onlookers: “There we have it, a very elaborate piece of jewellery, diamond jewellery.”
Geoffrey touched on the history behind the piece, reminding the guest: “Of course, Liverpool was a very prosperous town at this time. A great trading port.
“Probably funds came together to buy her [The Mayoress] this, I have to say, very lavish present isn’t it?” with the guest agreeing: “It’s beautiful.”
As always, the expert probed the guest on how they had come to end up with the item as she explained the close connection she had to its origins.
She replied: “My husband’s great-grandfather was Lord Mayor of Liverpool. So this belonged to his great grandmother.”
Geoffrey noted: “And of course, it would be part of her duty to be here, there and everywhere with him.”
He soon delved further into the specifics of the item, adding: “It’s just post-1900, which was the height of the art-nouveau movement.
“The characteristic of the art-novena movement are these swirling designs, this sort of sinuous form – loosely heart-shaped I suppose.
“It’s actually mounted in gold and the white stones set in silver, which is typical of the prior, not in platinum.”

The expert added: “It’s very versatile. There’s a fitting on the back you can use to unscrew it as a pendant and you can wear it also as a brooch.
“But, it’s a good, good thing. Come on, have you ever been tempted to wear it?”
The guest admitted she had thought about wearing the beautiful piece of jewellery but questioned where she would be able to do so.
Geoffrey agreed: “It’s very tricky, isn’t it. And actually, that rather does impinge on the value of these objects because in the UK there aren’t the occasions that there were.

“But it is a good story, and there’s quite a substantial diamond here in the middle and a perfectly nice pearl,” before Geoffrey moved onto the all-important valuation.
“I think I’m going to value it at something like £7,000 to £10,000,” Geoffrey revealed, leaving the guest lost for words.
Visibly stunned, she replied: “I won’t wear it out to a party then!” with Geoffrey suggesting: “Sitting at home?”
The guest concluded she would wear the brooch whilst sitting in front of the TV watching Antiques Roadshow.
Antiques Roadshow airs Sundays at 8pm on BBC One.
