Antiques Roadshow guest snubs expert by saying medal ‘worth more’ than valuation

Antiques Roadshow guests are often given huge surprises when they ask for their belongings to be valued on the hit BBC show.

But one man decided to completely snub an expert’s valuation on last week’s episode, due to the importance of the item to his family.

The man brought along a silver medal that belonged to his great great grandfather which had an incredible backstory.

His relative was just 14 when he signed up to be a lifeboat volunteer and rescued 20 men off the coast off North Wales.

The ship in question was likely Swedish and, after being rescued in 1889, the crew gifted him the medal.

Analysing the artefact and just how incredible the rescue was, expert Mark Smith said: “We’re talking about lifeboats that are drawn by horses out to shore and then rode out to the shipwreck.

“It’s a storm and you’ve got to get your lifeboat out to that, which is a very dangerous thing to do.

“I think it was a very brave lad for someone who was 14, as were all of them.”

Mark then turned to the all-important valuation.

“Today, it’s actually worth £700,” he said.

But, while seemingly surprised at the huge value, the owner replied: “Good grief, worth more than that to us.”

And Mark understood, given the close connection the family have to the medal.

Elsewhere on Sunday’s show, a man was left gobsmacked after finding out two glass bottles he found at the back of a cupboard were worth a fortune.

And in a previous episode, another guest couldn’t believe the value of her old silver spoon collection.
