Ben Fogle returns to Castaway island for show’s 20th anniversary

Before reality TV was all about gaining millions of followers and online clothing deals, a group of unknowns went to live on Taransay for a BBC show.

Launched in 2000, Castaway was dubbed the original reality show as it started six months before Big Brother .

And while there was no winner and no prize, it helped launch the career of Ben Fogle. And two decades on, Ben will return to the island for the 20th anniversary with the other castaways.

“I think there are plans for a 20th anniversary get-together,” he revealed. “I’ve had some emails. I have been back twice , once for my honeymoon and a couple of years ago for the The One Show.

“It will be a reunion of all the people who were there. It would be a private visit, I think the BBC have lost interest.”

The 46-year-old was the breakout star on the show, in which 36 people were tasked with spending a year on the Outer Hebrides island, building their own shelters and fending for themselves as a community.

Looking back at his experiences in the show – which pulled in over eight million viewers and was nominated for two BAFTAS – and his career since, Ben said: “I’d like to think I’ve stayed true to who I am and to my beliefs and philosophies.

“It’s quite easy in the industry to get swept away and believe the hype and some people run away with success. I’ve never done that.”

Ben is back on the road with his tour, Tales From The Wilderness, this month, and January to March 2020. Details and tickets at benfogle.com
