BRITs 2020: Winner Lewis Capaldi leaves fans shocked with sassy swipe at Love Island ex
The BRIT Awards 2020 are over for another year and there were certainly some powerful messages made at the annual event that left viewers thinking. One winner, Lewis Capaldi, took a different approach and used his acceptance speech to crack jokes about his ex-girlfriend who is currently on Love Island – and it was pretty funny.
Lewis won two awards at the prestigious ceremony, one for Best New Artist and the second for Song of the Year for Someone You Loved.
As the 23-yer-old national treasure walked to the stage collect his award, he didn’t leave his humour at home and addressed rumours that ex-Paige Turley inspired the single.
Grabbing the mic and shaking his head in disbelief, the heart-throb thanked the crowd who in turn, applauded the favourite.
Giggling, he began his speech: “Thanks very much for this.

“Contrary to popular belief, many think it’s [the song] about my ex girlfriend who you can now see every night on Love Island,” he laughed, with a bottle of Buckfast in hand.
The crowd erupted with laughter as he continued: “But it’s actually about my grandmother, who sadly passed away two years ago.”
The sombre note hushed the room as viewers waited to hear what he had to say next.
And, in typical Lewis style, he didn’t let it dampen his spirits.
“I hope to god that ITV don’t contact her to be on a reality TV show,” he hooted, taking a dig at the dating program.
But his jokes didn’t end there.
He went on to crack some more, leaving the crowd in hysterics at his train of thought as he thanked those close to him.
“It’s been the best year of my life, thanks to every one, thanks to my label, thanks to my mum and dad for… I don’t know.. making love?!” another fit of the giggles followed before he added a special thanks to the person who inspired the award winning song.
“And, thanks to my grandmother… for dying? Sorry! Thanks very much, see you later!”
Unable to compose himself anymore, a laughing Lewis ran off stage clutching his bottle of booze and his award while the audience wept with laughter.
Earlier on in the evening, after receiving his award for Best New Artist, his acceptance speech was muted by the bash after he proceeded to swear on stage pre-watershed.
Fans saw Lewis mouth into the mic as presenters Nial Horan and Clara Amfo laughed with disbelief at what he just said.
