Carol Vorderman makes epic dig at Dominic Cummings at Pride of Britain Awards

Carol Vorderman made a subtle yet powerful dig at Dominic Cummings during her opening monologue at this year’s Pride of Britain Awards and we are here for it.

On Sunday evening, the Pride of Britain Awards aired on ITV, celebrating the achievements of people across the nation.

The event was hosted by Vorderman, who made a grand entrance flying over the UK in a chopper, waving at key workers who she credited for ‘keeping the nation going through challenging times’.

She then stepped off the helicopter as she arrived at Royal Hospital Chelsea for the ceremony, wearing a stunning, bespoke, sparkly top and royal blue skirt ensemble by designer Sassi Holford.

The 59-year-old introduced the award ceremony by explaining that this year, amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the awards are being taken to the winners, adding: ‘We’ve recruited Britain’s biggest stars to surprise some truly amazing people all across the nation.’

The former Countdown star then noted how difficult the recent months have been for everyone, at which point she made a noticeable dig at the prime minister’s chief adviser Cummings.

‘Whether you’ve been working at the kitchen table, homeschooling the kids, teaching your Nan to Zoom or even taking a day trip to Barnard Castle, they’ve been tough times for us all,’ she said, a cheeky glint in her eye as she looked into the camera.

In March this year, during a period of lockdown, Cummings famously drove a 260-mile distance between London and his family’s home in Durham with his young child and wife Mary Wakefield, who was displaying symptoms of coronavirus at the time.

Cummings argued that the trip was necessary so he and his wife could access childcare if required for their child.

On 12 April, the political adviser drove 25 miles from his parents’ home in Durham to Barnard Castle, which he said he did in order to test his eyesight before driving back to London.

Several Pride of Britain viewers expressed their admiration for Vorderman following her reference to Cummings’ infamous trip to Barnard Castle.

‘Carol Vorderman you absolute legend,’ one Twitter user said.

‘@carolvorders throwing shade at Dominic Cummings… yes!’ another remarked.
