Casualty returns to filming with dramatic coronavirus episodes

Covid 19 is coming to Casualty, as filming resumes on the BBC’s popular Saturday night drama. It will return with what’s promised to be a powerful and dramatic episode, which seeks to reflect both the strain the coronavirus has placed on the NHS but also the heroic personal contributions of NHS staff during this time.

Connie Beauchamp (Amanda Mealing) finds herself under enormous pressure when several of her staff team contract the virus themselves – including Jacob. As we know from our last sighting of them, Connie and Jacob (Charles Venn) are back together again so it’s a personal concern for Connie as much as a professional one.

Can their rekindled relationship survive under such difficult circumstances? And will Jacob pull through?

The episode will also reflect the devastation the virus caused in care homes through a story thread featuring Charlie (Derek Thompson), as well as the day-to-day sacrifices made by NHS staff during the height of the pandemic.

Lev (Uriel Emil) makes the decision to move out of the family home to protect his son Luka, who is vulnerable because of his cancer treatment. This of course gives Faith (Kirsty Mitchell) time to reflect on Dylan (William Beck)’s bombshell accusation that Lev cheated on her with another man.

Meanwhile Fenisha (Olivia D’Lima) still hasn’t told anyone about her pregnancy. Can she continue to work during a pandemic and still keep her secret, or will she be forced to tell Ethan (George Rainsford) or Jan (Di Botcher)?

The show will be filmed under strict production protocols to keep the cast and crew safe. Through careful planning and inventive techniques, the usual high quality and unmissable drama of Casualty will be maintained, although the episodes will be only 40 minutes long rather than the usual 50.

Kate Oates, Head of Continuing Drama at BBC Studios, says: ‘We are thrilled to be back in production with BBC’s longest running medical show. The writers, Casualty teams, cast and crew are back on set with stories that reflect the extraordinary times we are living through.

‘We can’t wait for the audience to see them and to be back in the Saturday night schedule.’
