Corrie’s Steph Davis on ‘winging it’ with childcare as a working mum
Stephanie Davis is returning to the world of soap opera after a three year break, but this time, she’s swapping Hollyoaks for Coronation Street.
The actress, 30, plays Courtney Vance, the wife of local entrepreneur, Darren Vance (Ryan Early) who ends up getting close to teenager Aadi Alahan (Adam Hussain).
Three years ago, Stephanie left Hollyoaks where she played Sinead O’Connor to care for her son, Caben-Albi who’s now six-years-old. While getting back into the acting world was a tough decision Stephanie was determined to “getting back to doing what I love”. But says it’s not without its challenges when it comes to childcare.
“Do you know what? We're winging it,” admits Steph. “We're getting there. With the schedule, it’s good because you find out on the Friday before what you're doing for that week – whereas I'm used to finding out the night before.
“So it's great because obviously Joe [Mckalroy, Stephanie’s boyfriend], is amazing, he's a massive help, and so is my mum. So we're just doing breakfast club or after school club if we need to, or Joe's going to get him, or if he's at work, my mum's going to get him. We're just winging it every week, you know? But so far, it's been fine.
“It’s weird not being with him all throughout the day, but Caben’s at a really good age. And those younger years go so fast, that’s why I wanted to spend time with him.”
Stephanie says her mum, Pauline, not only has been a huge support with Caben, but also helped Stephanie pursue her acting dreams.
“She really has backed me, I don't know what to do without her,” says Steph. “She's been a massive, massive part of my life.
“And when I think now, I’ve got Caben who’s six,” continues Stephanie. “We’re always running around doing football and swimming, you realise how much your parents did for you. I’m like ‘thank you so much mum for everything you’ve done for me’. She’s amazing.”
Steph's first scenes are set to air on the 19th July, and she’s in two minds whether to let Caben watch her Corrie debut.
“I'm gonna let him watch the first few episodes,” she says. “And then after that, we'll have to see, it depends what episodes they are. Because obviously, Courtney’s doing a lot of kissing with Aadi.
“So probably not those bits, but he can watch me. We’re all going to get together, all my family, we’re going to have a little night in my house and watch the first two episodes.”
Catch Coronation Street on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8pm, ITV1.
