Dr Hilary slams ‘selfish’ young people ignoring health advice ‘Damaging the NHS’
Good Morning Britain hosts Ben Shephard and Kate Garraway welcomed Dr Hilary Jones onto the ITV show this morning to discuss Boris Johnson’s latest press conference on the UK’s plan to tackle coronavirus. However, the show’s resident doctor blasted young people in an impassioned rant about the importance of listening to the government’s advice.
In yesterday’s conference, the Prime Minister offered up some optimism by claiming the UK can “turn the tide” on the coronavirus crisis within 12 weeks.
However, Dr Hilary warned members of the public should not believe this statement means the crisis will be over within this timeframe.
Dr Hilary began: “When Boris Johnson says, ‘We’re going to turn the tide in 12 weeks,’ that’s not an end to this.
“And currently the tide is still coming in, so we’re seeing more cases, seeing more mortality and whilst we look for hope and optimism, we grab it.

“But it’s not going to end in 12 weeks, even if turn the tide by then, there will be a peak, it might be August, it might be earlier, it will be somewhere around there.
“And then to will recede again but currently the tide is still coming in and that’s why the messages about social distancing or physically distancing are so vital.”
GMB’s resident doctor then hit out at young people for refusing to abide by the Prime Minister’s advice.
He continued: “There’s are a lot of young people that we know who are ignoring all this they’re saying, ‘I’m young, probably won’t affect me, I’m tough, I’m a risk taker, look at me, I’m going to carry on as normal.’
“I’ll tell you why they’re being selfish because when they get ill, they will want treatment.
“If they get ill they will want treatment and that will take a healthcare professional time, the money from the NHS and resources.”
“And they’ll take that health care professional away from a child who needs chemotherapy treatment for cancer,” he added.
“They’ll take a health care professional away from someone who’s had a heart attack and needs a stent in their coronary artery.

“So they are being selfish and unless their adhere by this regulations which are very sensible.

In yesterday’s conference, the Prime Minister told reporters: “I believe that a combination of the measures that we’re asking the public to take and better testing, scientific progress, will enable us to get on top of it within the next 12 weeks and turn the tide.
“I cannot stand here and tell you that by the end of June that we will be on the downward slope.

“It’s possible but I simply can’t say that that’s for certain. We don’t know how long this will go on for.”
“But what I can say is that this is going to be finite,” he concluded.
Sir Patrick Vallance, the UK’s chief scientific officer, was also asked how long he could predict the virus would go on for.
“We are dealing with a brand new virus. We are dealing with learning as we go on and I think now to put absolute timelines on things is not possible.”
