EastEnders viewers are counting down the days until Gray Atkins (played by Toby-Alexander Smith) is finally exposed as a murderer. Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) is firmly convinced she needs her husband in her life despite attempts by Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) to change her mind. However, if the new mum finally realises she needs to leave her husband, will Gray’s sinister plan stop her?

On Christmas Day, Chelsea and Gray got married but the wedding didn’t go as smoothly as planned.

After throwing Whitney out of the Queen Vic for “lying” about her husband, Chelsea later learnt the truth.

The mum was horrified to read extracts of Chantelle Atkins’ (Jessica Plumber) blog posts detailing the abuse she suffered at the hands of Gray.

Chelsea told Whitney and Kheerat Panesar (Jaz Deol) she believed them but was afraid she wouldn’t be able to walk away from Gray after marrying him.

Chelsea, who was pregnant at the time, attempted to flee Walford but was stopped and subsequently went into labour.

Gray and Chelsea’s son Jordan was born premature and the newlyweds’ focus has been entirely on the health of their son.

The abusive lawyer has convinced Chelsea she can’t manage without him and has been slowly isolating her from her loved ones.

Although Whitney and Kheerat are still determined to save Chelsea, their efforts made be pointless.

Express.co.uk spoke to Shanika Varga a Senior Solicitor at Stowe Family Law about the problems Chelsea could face if she tried to walk away from Gray.

She said: “Chelsea needs to be aware that a divorce petition cannot be filed at the court until she and Gray have been married for 12 months.

“She could take advice on whether she has grounds to annul the marriage, or she could apply for judicial separation.

“Judicial separation would not end the marriage but will allow her to deal with the financial consequences of the marriage breakdown (although not to the same extent as if financial proceedings had been issued alongside divorce proceedings).”

If Chelsea realises she is unable to divorce Gray for 12 months she might lose all hope and give up on the idea of finding another way of leaving her husband.

Gray has been manipulating Chelsea for months and his shock proposal was likely a part of his sinister plan to control the mother of his child.

When Chelsea fell pregnant with Jordan, she was no longer in a relationship with the lawyer.

Despite this, Gray announced he wanted them to be a family and proposed.

Although Chelsea rejected his marriage proposal at first she changed her mind when she feared she’d struggle on her own.

As a lawyer, Gray would know his new wife couldn’t divorce him before 12 months.

The master manipulator could have thought to himself that being married for a year could give him enough time to cut Chelsea off from her family and give him total control over his wife’s life.

Meanwhile, Whitney remains determined to stop history from repeating itself.

The market trader has shown Chantelle’s blog posts to the police but they have urged her to drop her “obsession” from Gray.

How far is Whitney prepared to go to stop Gray from hurting Chelsea?

EastEnders airs on BBC One on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
